In accordance with the principle of "never change a winning team," the carbon frame and carbon fork set have remained unchanged to this day, delighting both young and old with its direct power transmission, consistently good damping characteristics, and the maximum tire clearance of up to 35 millimeters. Moreover, the Scultura Endurance 6000 presented here shines this season in a fresh look with a noble metallic finish, semi-integrated brake lines, and a technical upgrade in the form of the new Shimano 105 Di2 12-speed group.

To better assess the capabilities of this comfort racer, we tested it both with the standard 32 mm road tires and with 36 mm Anyroad and gravel tires from the manufacturer Challenge. We present the result of this comparison at the end of the article in the form of a One-For-All buying guide for "Road vs. Granfondo vs. Gravel". There, you can find out which off-road applications can be covered with the Scultura Endurance 6000, whether the base is also suitable for a gravel racer, and what would be necessary for a worthy conversion.

Geometry & Technology

As the model name suggests, the frame of the Scultura Endurance is based on the super sporty all-rounder Scultura, which has been used in professional sports for many years. The biggest difference is the updated geometry, which has been adapted to the needs of long-distance and comfort-oriented riders. The more upright riding position and the ability to mount wide tires not only give the Scultura Endurance a more comfortable ride on rough roads but also offer additional control on more challenging terrain.

To increase vertical flex at the rear and reduce annoying vibrations, the Scultura Endurance features a narrow seat tube for Merida's Expert CC seat post with a 27.2 mm diameter and 15 mm setback. Moreover, the special shaping of the seat and chain stays gives the Scultura Endurance a leaf spring-like compliance.

Despite the higher stability due to the flatter head tube angle and the slightly longer wheelbase, it is important to note that the Endurance has not been softened at all and still corners extremely sharply.

For a tidy cockpit, Merida combined its "Wire Port System", which allows brake lines to be routed through the head tube, with an FSA SMR ACR stem including FSA ACR headset. Essentially, this represents a technically solid basis, only the lines of our review bike were a bit too long from the factory, which is why the cable routing beneath the stem did not look particularly sleek.

On the other hand, we found the hidden seat post clamp functional and beautiful, contributing to the smooth design language and incidentally reducing air turbulence, as well as the two proprietary and stylish "Disc Coolers". These forged aluminum components under the brake calipers feature CNC-machined cooling fins and are supposed to dissipate about 35% more brake heat.

In practice

The Scultura road bike has always stood for pronounced sportiness, stiffness, and agility - especially since Merida entered the ProTour as a bike sponsor. I can confirm this from my own experience, as I have had the pleasure of extensively reviewing the Scultura Evo (2010), Scultura SL (2013), and Scultura LTD (2016) models. As an amateur "racer," I particularly appreciated the frame's enormous stability, the low position of the handlebars, and the direct handling. However, as a passionate "bike tourist," I must admit that these characteristics bother me more than they support me today.

From my perspective, the current Scultura Endurance represents the optimal choice for most road cyclists. Those who do not chase criterium points on weekends or aim to win classics or mountain stages will find their perfect partner in the Granfondo version - with a relaxed yet still sporty geometry, a beautiful design, consistently high-quality and coherent equipment, a wide range of applications, and - for a specialist dealer bike - a good price/performance ratio. But let's take it one step at a time.

  • Merida Scultura Endurance 6000

Handling and Comfort

The head tube is somewhat longer and logically leads to a more upright sitting position. The same applies to the wheelbase and the chainstays, which contributes to the high running smoothness. Consequently, the handling loses a bit of agility compared to the Scultura racing bike, but remains lively thanks to the torsionally stiff carbon fork and the not too shallow steering angle - even with the mounted 32 mm wide Maxxis tires. The Endurance version also offers the high stiffness in the bottom bracket area known from the Scultura models, which contributes to the overall direct power transmission.

The damping comfort in the seating area is more than just fine thanks to the Flexstay construction of the chain and seat stays, the slender seat post, and the wide tires, but could be higher at the handlebars. At least a better damping or thicker wrapped handlebar tape would be necessary here, since both the fork and the aluminum handlebars transmit shocks extremely intensely to the wrists.

At this point, I would like to recommend the Merida Expert SL saddle. The design and shape show clear parallels to the Specialized Power saddle series and guarantee equally high sitting comfort in every cycling position.

Design

Beauty, as so often, lies in the eye of the beholder; but when it comes to frame design and the metallic paintwork, everyone should agree: Merida has really done a great job with the Scultura Endurance.

Furthermore, a real feast for the eyes are the CNC milling on the cooling fins of the Disc Cooler and on the Directmount mount of the derailleur, the integrated seat post clamp in the frame, and the possibility to completely remove the bridge at the rear. The in-house Expert components and the semi-integrated FSA stem/headset solution complete the tidy overall impression.

Gears & Brakes

The 105 Di2 12-speed marks Shimano's entry into the segment of electronic shifting groups and combines a smooth shifting experience with the proven quality of the Japanese. Although it is not exactly cheap - it is only about 400 euros below the Ultegra Di2 and significantly above the mechanical 105 - we would still not choose a mechanical shifting group anymore. The new group not only looks noble but also works excellently and is well-chosen and balanced thanks to the 1:1 gear ratio with the 50/34 compact crankset and the 11-34 cassette.

Shimano also honed the ergonomics of the brake/shift levers and developed higher-raised hoods as well as a lever shape optimized for more comfort and control in any riding position. In line with the Dura Ace and Ultegra updates, the braking system itself was also refined: Despite the 10% larger pad clearance in the resting position, the brakes engage quickly and reliably, making the braking process itself more powerful and controllable.

The result: The disc brakes with their two 160-millimeter discs showed no weaknesses during the test period. Broken in - heated up by braking - adjusted. After that, the Shimano RT64 Discs didn't make a peep. Even on fast and steep downhills, it was not possible to make them ring or jingle by deliberately overheating them.

As usual, the shifting system can also be individually configured via "E-Tube Project" on a smartphone, by adjusting, for example, the shifting speed, the number of shifts when a button is held down, or the Synchro-Shift and Semi-Synchro-Shift functionality accordingly. Moreover, the system can be paired with many third-party bike computers, including Garmin and Wahoo. This allows these devices to display the currently engaged gear or the battery charge level, for example.

Challenge Strada Bianca vs. Getaway

To test the versatility of the comfort racer, we conducted reviews with both 36 mm wide Anyroad tires and gravel tires from the manufacturer Challenge. And because we wanted to ride with tubes, we chose the "Tube Type" variant for both models.

Challenge Strada Bianca

The large-volume Strada Bianca in 36C rolls quickly and safely over bad roads and is an ideal full-throttle tire for gravel paths and cobblestones. Its laterally extensive sipes provide excellent grip even in fast corners.

The manufacturer-recommended rim internal width should be between 17 and 23 mm. However, mounting on the Merida Expert SL wheels (17 mm internal width) proved to be extremely challenging, and we had to refrain from using our Tubolito tubes - they would not have survived the procedure.

Challenge Getaway

The Getaway in 36C is an ideal gravel all-rounder for all riders who do not want to compromise on high performance, durability, and comfort. It comes with a subtle yet grippy tread pattern, robust shoulder lugs, and thanks to its large volume, offers plenty of grip and comfort.

The installation on the Mavic Allroad Pro Carbon SL wheels with a 23 mm internal width was absolutely easy, which is why the Tubolito CX/Gravel tubes were ultimately used. Another advantage of the easy installation was that we no longer had to fear getting a flat while on the go. During the review, we even had a really brutal puncture. Fortunately, changing the tube even on the trail proved to be completely trouble-free.

Scultura Endurance "One-For-All" Buying Guide (Road vs. Granfondo vs. Gravel)

Even though the temptation is great to transform one's current endurance road bike into a gravel racer (or even into a gravel adventure bike) and this seems not so far-fetched due to the frame base, the devil is, as so often, in the details.

Scultura Endurance as a Gravel Racer?
This was exactly the case with the Scultura Endurance tested here. By using wider, more profiled tires, its off-road capability could indeed be increased from 10% to about 20%, but due to the components installed, further significant improvements were not possible within a financially reasonable frame. Because apart from the straight aluminum handlebar and the uncomfortable handlebar tape, the narrow wheels as well as the gear group mainly designed for pure road use, or its gearing at the front, were hindrances for more demanding off-road use.

Scultura Endurance as a Gravel-Adventure Bike?
While a "Gravel Racer" is at least theoretically feasible, the notion of a "Gravel-Adventure Bike" remains pure fantasy. In plain language: Despite the dedicated tinkerer's investment of much time and money, it is not possible to create a "true gravel bike" for rough terrain, bikepacking, or other adventures based on the Scultura Endurance frame platform. This would require even more tire clearance, a significantly slacker head angle, and more varied mounting options on the frame and fork.

It is also important to note that an endurance road bike is positioned closer to an all-round road bike. Therefore, adapting it to a decent gravel bike proves to be uneconomical in most cases. On the other hand, converting from a 2x gravel bike to an endurance road bike can be done much more easily and cost-effectively - it simply requires fitting narrower tires. However, the owner's trained eye must overlook the aesthetics of the protruding handlebars and the increased tire clearances.

Gravel racer theoretically yes, gravel adventure bike no.

Application: Gravel Race

Suitability Features
Tire clearance and suitability of wheels (internal width) Of course, "even wider" would be even better, but Merida's stated maximum tire width of 35C (actual tire clearance of about 36 mm) is perfectly fine for pure gravel race applications. A limiting factor, unfortunately, are the rather narrow aluminum wheels (17mm inside), which make tire changing a test of patience.
Our tip: max. 32C Anyroad tires with the original wheels or max. 36C with proper gravel wheels (>19 mm inside).
Geometry The sporty endurance geometry with only a slightly shorter reach, a higher head tube, and the snappy wheelbase results in a comfortable, slightly forward-leaning sitting position with good handling and lots of control over the front wheel. Thanks to the relatively steep head angle, the excellent agility is also maintained with 36 mm wide tires. Top!
Off-road comfort Frame, fork, handlebars, and wheels are extremely stiff, the handlebar tape very thin, the head angle rather steep. Therefore, the off-road comfort is on the hard side.
With wide tires and a thicker handlebar tape, a "Strade Bianche" marathon could be endured with dignity, but it should be noted that the endurance road bike (in the original configuration) primarily feels at home on good to bad asphalt.
Ergonomics (handlebar, handlebar tape & shift levers) While the handlebar without flare, the handlebar tape, and the shape of the Shimano Di2 shift levers are still fine for brisk "Strade Bianche" rides on firm ground, they quickly reach their limits in rough terrain - especially downhill.
Groupset Shimano's 105 Di2 works great on the road or under street-like conditions. It's only on extreme climbs and particularly muddy terrains that the disadvantages compared to true off-road groupsets become apparent.

Tip: For those looking for an out-of-the-box, lightning-fast gravel racer without compromises, the recently introduced Merida Scultura Endurance GR is recommended, which positions itself between the Scultura Endurance (Granfondo) presented here and the Silex (Bikepacking and Adventure Gravel).

The new GR model is based one-to-one on this endurance frame set and has the same characteristics: Comfortable seating position, stable handling despite high agility, and good damping properties (very good on poor asphalt and sufficiently good off-road); gravel-specific wheels, wide lug tires, a flared gravel handlebar, and an adequate gravel groupset complete the GR variant. Therefore, it has the best prerequisites to handle everything from fast Anyroad training sessions to demanding Gravel Granfondos in a confident manner. The missing mounting points for racks and bikepacking bags highlight the sporty ambition.

BB verdict: The "better road bike" for almost all hobby cyclists!

The Merida Scultura Endurance 6000 meets all the requirements of a full-fledged Granfondo racing bike and also positions itself on the sporty side within the endurance category. In our opinion, it should be a more sensible choice for most road cyclists than a ProTour racing bike.

The Shimano 105 Di2 groupset works flawlessly, and the rest of the equipment is overall successful - including Merida's own components such as handlebars, seat post, and saddle. A minor downside is the thin handlebar tape and the slightly outdated wheels with only 17 mm internal width, which makes mounting wider tires, especially with tubes, "more challenging".

In summary, the Merida Scultura Endurance is an excellently equipped road bike with an attractive price-performance ratio and confident riding characteristics - perfect on the road and comfortably capable on unpaved paths! However, those looking for a true Gravel Racer should wait for the Scultura Endurance GR as a no-compromise conversion of the 6000 model would be too costly.
