With the new Focus Paralane Endurance Road Bike, the renowned German bicycle manufacturer Focus closes the gap this year between the Izalco Max road bike and the Atlas gravel bikes. The special feature of the new Paralane (Bikeboard.at was present at the launch in the picturesque Vosges of France): At first glance, it looks almost as fast as the professional racer due to its pronounced Kamm-Tail profiles; nevertheless, it has been optimized in every respect for long-distance suitability. This includes a modified carbon layup for balanced vertical compliance of frame and fork, a significantly more relaxed geometry, generous tire clearance, and a round seat post for increased seating comfort. Optionally available fenders improve the comfort factor in rainy weather and also protect the following riders from wetness.
NoGold has been testing the racer since the beginning of the year.
The brand new Focus Paralane is simply beautiful. The endurance racer comes in shiny black with matte elements and impresses with its simple elegance. The cables are hidden, which makes the exterior appearance even cleaner. This is how I like bicycles - after all, I already stand out enough. But enough chatter, now it's time to get on the bike. Because we're here to ride, not to velosophize.

Jochen NoGoldEquipment and Integration
The aerodynamically optimized cockpit impresses both visually and functionally. The advanced C.I.S. road bike stem routes the cables almost invisibly along the underside into the frame and can be quickly and easily replaced at any time. Additionally, the entire handlebar-stem unit can be completely removed if the Paralane is to be transported in a bike bag during travel. However, converting it into a race gravel bike with a flared handlebar is also easily possible, as the brake lines run beneath the handlebar tape and thus outside the handlebar.
The stem comes from the factory with an integrated bike computer mount for Wahoo and Garmin, which can alternatively be used to attach a light or an action camera. In the optionally attached handlebar bag on the top tube behind it, the most important items for the road can be stored.

With an approved system weight of 120 kg, the Paralane is suitable for both heavy riders and radical bikepacking adventurers. The bolted BSA bottom bracket, the removable front derailleur mount, and a standard derailleur hanger, which is also used by other brands, ensure smooth functionality in the long term and avoid potential technical problems or supply difficulties.
Endurance Geometry
Once adjusted and immediately deemed good. The geometry with the high head tube, long fork, and slack head angle is optimized for longer distances, which you can feel from the first few meters. I haven't sat this comfortably on a road bike in a long time. The first rides through the city and along the Danube are very relaxed. No pinching or pulling in the back, nothing. You just feel good on the Focus Paralane.
Additionally, the elevated seating position offers an excellent view of everything you might encounter on a ride in Vienna – children, dogs, frisbees, beer bottles, wheelchairs. This is especially important within the city or on busier routes.

The new Paralane is available in five frame sizes, calculated based on a professional bike fitter database. However, since every cyclist is individually built and has different needs, great emphasis was also placed on ensuring that the selected bike can be adapted to personal requirements to the highest degree. Therefore, the seat tube was designed for round 27.2 mm standard seat posts to ensure maximum flexibility. In combination with the aerodynamic C.I.S. road bike stem, which is available in six lengths from 70 to 120 mm and can be changed more easily than ever before, everyone should be able to achieve an optimal riding position.
Of course, all frame sizes received adjusted layups to ensure that the bikes have nearly identical stiffness values and riding characteristics across all sizes.
System weight, stiffness & more.
Sure, here's the translated text:```The system weight of a maximum of 120 kilograms fits perfectly for me, although unfortunately, this leaves no room for bags on a bikepacking tour. But that wasn't my goal anyway, even though the thought of a more challenging tour keeps resurfacing. The frame set with Kamm-Tail profiles is extremely stable, and when I write that, it is indeed so.
Overall, the stiffness of the entire bike is absolutely sensational. On no ride did I ever feel that anything was twisting or being pushed to its limits. There were also never any noises, whether during leisurely rolling or vigorous pedaling.
The Focus Paralane frame set is extremely stiff and stable.
And when NoGold writes that, then it is indeed so.Ride characteristics, tires, and brakes
I didn't want to believe it, but the 32-mm road bike tires ride absolutely brilliantly. I was used to 23- or 25-mm tires with super direct feedback over every bump in the road. The Vittoria tires (with Schwalbe tubes) are completely different. Sure, a bit less feedback, but extremely comfortable in return. Finally, I can also take the shortcut via Lusthausallee without feeling like I'm going to lose my water bottles in the first few kilometers (by the way, it's also very tedious to run there, I want to mention here).
Just as pleasant, I found the flexibility to be able to take almost any path. The bike path towards Orth an der Donau is known to be 90% well-paved, but the remaining, tedious 10% always kept me from the tour. Now I have finally made up for it and can only give my personal recommendation - provided the equipment cooperates.
I know, I know, he who brakes, loses. But I like to ride fast and brake hard, which is why braking performance is extremely important to me - not least because I have to reach for the lever a bit earlier and harder than others due to my natural acceleration downhill.
The Ultegra brake levers are easily accessible, offer good feedback, and grip hard but controlled in case of emergency. By the way, I find the 160mm discs front and rear very reassuring.
Optional: the Focus mudguard set
A few words about the mudguards: Focus has not only equipped the Paralane with numerous mounting points but also developed a special and really affordable mudguard set (Art.No. 311048800 for 39.99 euros) that is supposed to neither negatively impact the sporty appearance nor the everyday usability. I tested them on the first winter and spring rides and found them to be good apart from the aesthetics.
Although you can talk up these things because of their function, in practice, you still have to be very careful about how you park the bike. If anything comes into contact with the mudguards, the fairly tight protectors quickly start to rub against the tires, which is immediately noticeable as acoustic feedback. Therefore, I soon picked up the screwdriver and removed the mudguards. This was absolutely easy and not a big effort.
Note: The curved, silver mounting plate on the rear fender is a prototype and does not correspond to the final series.
The mounting points are cleverly hidden: one under the fork crown, the second behind the bottom bracket, and a third on the removable seat stay bridge. For excellent stability and high load capacities, there are two threads in the interchangeable thru-axles, which are included in the fender set. The fenders weigh 535 g, including the seat stay bridge and all screws, are typically mounted in 5 minutes, and are optimally adapted to the tires. The maximum tire clearance is 33 millimeters with mounted fenders. Additionally, the fenders were designed longer than usual to improve protection.

BB Verdict: | Sit on it, ride off, and have a lot of fun. |
I think I'm in love. No, seriously - the Focus Paralane is so perfectly designed that you would want to ride it on all routes. Whether it's the bike tour to Tulln or just the class reunion at the Schweizerhaus. Sit on it, ride off, and have a lot of fun – that's exactly how I like it!
Editor's note: NoGold will continue to ride the Paralane until someone from the Focus marketing team misses the bike. Afterwards, as he confidentially informed us, he definitely wants to purchase the test bike privately. A clear proof that the bike meets his wishes.
