After eight years with the VW Transporter, the electric-car future has arrived for me with the Skoda Elroq - and with it a few logistical challenges. As if by a twist of fate, a press release from the company Faltos landed in my inbox at the same time, announcing that the Faltos trailer is now also available with a high tarpaulin. Suddenly I had lots of ideas about how to improve the logistics of our bike transport and our photoshoots - and how the Faltos opens up many more possibilities without having to rent a huge garage or your own parking space where a large trailer would then stand unused 95% of the time.

Faltos: The Concept

The Faltos is a tool-free folding trailer that can be folded and unfolded by hand in less than 2 minutes with a little practice; with the raised frame and tarpaulin it accordingly takes about 9 minutes. The construction relies on a steel frame with corrosion protection, aluminum sidewalls and a robust floor made of film-faced plywood with eight lashing eyes. All in all, the workmanship is very high quality. That gives you a trailer that gets out of the way as much as possible in everyday life, but is fully usable when needed. Anyone who has ever tried to store a conventional trailer permanently knows the problem: the garage is too small, the basement unsuitable, and leaving it outside is not an option.

Folded down the Faltos shrinks to around 85 x 185 x 110 cm; unfolded up to 242 x 124 cm of loading area are available. Newly added is the raised frame with tarpaulin. This turns the open loading area into a protected cargo space — and that is exactly what makes the topic interesting for us as cyclists.

Transport concepts: trailer vs. cargo van vs. rear rack or roof rack

Why a trailer is the ideal solution for us is quickly explained: In the VW Transporter with the double cab the bikes were safely stowed, but with more than one bike you had to remove the front wheels. That did provide space for up to 6 e-MTBs, however this procedure came with several major drawbacks: first, the frequent loading and unloading during shoots becomes really tedious (especially with bikes over 25 kg); second, in everyday life you often end up alone in a fairly large vehicle, which even when driven frugally still consumes about 8 liters of diesel per 100 km.

A car, whether electric or not, offers significantly more everyday practicality and comfort. After an extensive comparison with the Renault Kangoo and the Mercedes T‑Class, we decided on the Skoda Elroq, because despite its larger volume the Kangoo remains too much of a compromise for me.

In the short time with the new car it has already become clear that for frequent trips with one or two bikes the rear rack is unbeatable in terms of handling. For longer distances, with more than two bikes, for photo shoots or transporting larger loads, the Faltos is the ideal solution for our purposes. Before we turn to the technical data and practical experience with the Faltos, we’ll briefly compare the different transport systems.

Bicycle transport comparison

Solution Advantages Disadvantages
Trailer (e.g. foldable ones) - very high capacity (multiple bikes, including eMTBs)
- no space issue in the car
- flexible (also for other cargo)
- can be stored away completely when not needed (foldable ones especially convenient)
- additional vehicle → handling, parking
- increased fuel consumption
- reversing takes practice
- additional costs (insurance, inspection/registration depending on country)
Roof rack - interior remains free
- more affordable entry option
- no additional parking space required
- bikes on top → lifting is strenuous (esp. e-bikes)
- higher air resistance, fuel consumption
- height limit (parking garages!)
- wind noise
Rear rack (towbar) - easy loading
- stable transport
- usually suitable for 2–4 bikes
- little effect on vehicle height
- access to the trunk is restricted
- consider license plate/lighting
- weight limited on the tow hitch
- bikes exposed (weather, theft)
VW bus / van - bikes protected inside the cabin
- theft protection significantly better
- weather-independent
- often provides sleeping/traveling options
- expensive to buy & operate
- often oversized for everyday use
- finding parking difficult
- interior gets dirty quickly
In the car (classic) - no additional hardware needed
- bikes relatively well protected
- flexible for spontaneous transport
- disassembly necessary (remove wheels etc.)
- interior gets dirty
- limited space
- often fiddly when stowing
Car with interior fit-out (rails, mounts) - cleaner, reproducible solution in the interior
- faster loading than "throwing them in loosely"
- good protection for bikes
- space still limited
- installation effort/cost
- vehicle still remains a "compromise solution"
Pickup (load bed) - lots of space, easy loading
- tolerant to dirt
- good combination with mounts
- bikes unprotected (weather, theft)
- high loading edge
- often impractical for everyday use

What people often overlook

A few points that are often more important in practice than you might think:
  • Loading height beats everything → roof rack almost always loses here
  • Weather → an enclosed interior or a tarp (trailer) makes a long-term difference
  • Everyday practicality → the trailer just sits around, the van hogs parking spaces
  • Flexibility → the trailer clearly wins if it's also used for other stuff

briefly summarized

  • Minimalists: roof- or rear-mounted carrier
  • Practical users: trailer (especially foldable)
  • Frequent users / travel: van
  • Occasional solution: toss the bike into the car

Background: Why the Faltos exist in the first place

Your browser does not support the video tag.
The concept became known through its inventor Ulrich Müller, who had already recognized the problems many trailer owners face, and through a TV show in 2018. As practical a trailer is—especially for small cars—its storage is often a problem, particularly when it sits unused most of the time. Since then the Faltos idea has been continuously developed. Today Faltos is not just a foldable trailer, but rather a modular and smart transport system.

What's new: elevated rack & tarpaulin

The new raised frame is conceived as a system extension, with the basic folding mechanism remaining the central concept. With it, Faltos aims to achieve exactly the balancing act that fails with many trailers: more volume and weather protection without making the trailer permanently bulky. The combination of a folding trailer and a foldable raised frame as a technical solution is also patent-pending.

Accessories & Modularity

All around the new elevated rack, Faltos offers plenty of additional clever accessories: various tarpaulins, nets and cargo-securing solutions, or a safety box for the coupling. In addition, support legs for loading while stationary or universal carriers, if you want to secure the bikes to the trailer like on a classic roof-mounted bike rack. As a next step, a sidewall extension was also announced, which is to be mounted on the existing side walls.

Legal situation in Austria

With a maximum permissible total weight of 750 kg, the Faltos is, in the eyes of the law, a "light trailer" and can therefore always be towed with a Class B driving licence, regardless of the weight of the towing vehicle. The only requirement is that the vehicle's trailer load rating is sufficient and that the maximum permissible total weight of the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes. In addition, the total mass of an unbraked trailer (including cargo) may be at most half the unladen mass of the towing vehicle plus 75 kg (2:1 rule).

Expectations and reality for bicycle transport

For our specific use there was a clear idea and the notion that Faltos in combination with Bikestow would optimally fulfill this purpose. The list looked roughly like this:
  • compact mobility solution (car + trailer)
  • as minimal as possible when not in use (the majority of the time)
  • space for 4 people + 4 bikes (road bikes, eMTB, etc.) + accessories + travel luggage
  • protected from the weather
  • top-level securing, suitable for a wide range of high-end bikes
  • easy loading and unloading even with heavy e-bikes and during a shoot
  • versatile use also beyond bike transport
In the first practical review the Faltos combined with Bikestow not only met but exceeded my expectations. Here is a brief insight into our travel and shooting setup.

Faltos and Bikestow in use for bike transport

For the majority of its existence the Faltos lives in our office hall, folded down to the size of an Ikea cabinet to save space. When a larger assignment is coming up, it's a one-person job, takes about 10 minutes and works like this:
  • Step 1: Unfold and secure the drawbar
  • Step 2: Push the trailer out of the hall
  • Step 3: Release 4 retaining pins, unfold the front section, re-secure the pins and lock the front section in place
  • Step 4: Release 4 retaining pins, unfold the rear section, re-secure the pins and lock the rear section in place
  • Step 5: Hang in two longitudinal braces at the top
  • Step 6: Fold out the Bikestow and secure it with a lashing strap
  • Step 7: Hang eight slats on the side
  • Step 8: Unroll the tarp and fasten the grommets
  • Step 9: Hook the tarp fastenings onto the side wall
This makes the Faltos trailer ready for loading with four bikes in less than 10 minutes, while still offering plenty of extra space for luggage and accessories. The whole construction is extremely sturdy and well finished. There will be a separate report on the Bikestow, but in combination with the Faltos it provides a good way to not only securely anchor up to four wheels to the trailer, but also to unload them again very quickly and easily. This will prove particularly useful for our shoots in future, where from experience you have to handle a wide variety of bikes without risking scratches or an unstable load. The Bikestow, like the Faltos, is an extremely well-designed construction. Whether 20 mm road tyres or 2.6" 29" MTB tyres — the wheels are fixed in a matter of seconds so that they don't move a millimetre. Only the opposite wheel (front or rear) needs to be strapped down separately on the trailer so the bikes don't start to shift when driving over rough terrain.

BB verdict: The Swiss Army knife for bike transport

The Faltos is an ingenious and, above all, smart transport vehicle for bicycles, motorcycles and much more. Folding works in no time even in stormy conditions like during our photo shoot - even when you have to move the trailer on your own. The loading area not only provides space for the Bikestow 4 and the corresponding high-end bikes from our review, but is also large enough to serve as inspiration for many other transport solutions. Thanks to the raised frame with tarpaulin cover, the bikes are protected from wind, weather and prying eyes.

For the long-term review I will still order the support legs that make loading and unloading the trailer easier when it is not attached to a vehicle. I'm also looking for a smart security solution (camera, alarm system, AirTag, reversing camera, etc.) in case the trailer is left unattended for a short time - tips are always welcome! In the next episodes I will also introduce the Bikestow in detail as well as the Thule Epos carrier, and in the autumn there will be another update on how the Faltos has performed.
