DT Swiss impressively demonstrates with its latest generation of aluminum wheels for Road and Endurance that for the development of particularly aerodynamic wheel systems, it is not always necessary to rely on carbon as a material.
While the models AR 1600 SPLINE and A 1800 SPLINE with their specially designed rim profile and hidden spoke nipples primarily target passionate road cyclists who are chasing personal bests, the Endurance wheels ER 1600 SPLINE and E 1800 SPLINE with higher stability and better control in crosswinds provide more comfort on longer rides. All wheels are available either in 28" or in 650b.
DT Swiss: Aero for Everyone
Two new aluminum rims, aero spokes, hidden nipples, and revised ratchets. Two new aluminum rims
To minimize air resistance and optimize rideability, two new rim profiles with different dimensions have been developed for the Road and Endurance applications.
AERO A 510: The aerodynamically optimized shape effectively reduces air resistance and enables higher speeds.
ENDURANCE E 550: The aerodynamically optimized long-distance rim, with its 22 mm wide internal width, offers more comfort and lower rolling resistance at lower tire pressure.
Wind tunnel data
Both new aero-optimized aluminum wheels were carefully developed using CFD simulation and tested in the wind tunnel. Compared to two similar wheels from competitors, the Hunt 34 Aero Wide Disc SL and the Mavic Ksyrium 30 Disc, the AR 1600 SPLINE 30 have the lowest weighted air resistance of 15.2 W. All three wheels were tested under the same conditions in a test session.
Comparing the two new DT Swiss wheels with each other, their different intended uses logically also lead to differences in aerodynamic performance:
Since the ER 1600 SPLINE 30 were designed for endurance use on poorer roads, their rim width is also wider at 22 mm, ideally supporting 28C tires. This results in more comfort at lower tire pressure, but also in slightly increased air resistance values.
The AR 1600 SPLINE 30, on the other hand, are significantly narrower inside at 20 mm, which in turn minimizes air resistance. This makes them ideal for 25C tires and tendentially smoother roads.
Aero spokes, hidden nipples, and improved hubs/ratchets
The 1600 models are now equipped with DT Aero Comp II Straightpull spokes, while the 1800 models come with DT Aero Comp Wide Straightpull spokes. Both types of spokes are aerodynamically optimized thanks to the flat forging process used in their production. Hidden nipples are intended to further enhance the benefits of the aero spokes; they are very light and are located inside the rim, reducing air resistance around the rim.
To increase the maximum speed, the new aluminum wheels - depending on the model variant - received the improved hub models 350 with 36T Ratchet SL or 370 with 18T Ratchet LN system. The individual components are garnished with optimally adjusted spoke tension - a crucial factor in ensuring the quality and durability of a wheel.
Road Bike - AR 1600 SPLINE / A 1800 SPLINE / A 510 RIM
Both racing bike wheels share the same aluminum hook rim with a 20 millimeter inner width, which is also available individually in either 28" or 650b, and in three different drillings (24, 28, 32 holes) with the A 510 RIM. Furthermore, aero spokes and internally hidden nipples significantly contribute to their outstanding aerodynamic properties.
For the AR 1600 SPLINE 30, a Ratchet SL freehub with 36 teeth works in the 350 straightpull hubs, while the A 1800 SPLINE 30 manages with a Ratchet LN freehub with 18 teeth in 370 straightpull hubs. Primarily, the two wheel systems differ in their hubs and freehub, though the spokes (DT aero comp II vs. DT aero comp) also show slight variations. The weight difference is manageable with a difference of 33 grams, however, the price difference - depending on the wheel version - is between 100 and 200 Euros.
However, the technical differences should not have a significant impact on the top speed. In all three cases, the lightweight aluminum profile of the rim ensures good aero performance and offers high stability when accelerating, while the rider combats air resistance.

Endurance - ER 1600 SPLINE / E 1800 SPLINE / E 550 RIM
Both the ER 1600 SPLINE 30 and the more affordable E 1800 SPLINE 30 Endurance wheels roll on the newly developed and aerodynamically optimized E 550 RIM rims. These 30 mm high aluminum hook rims with 22 millimeters inside are also available as 28" or 650b variant and in three different drillings (24, 28, 32) individually, and are eager to be used in your individual Aero or Dynamo projects.
As with both road wheelsets, the ER 1600 SPLINE 30 features a Ratchet SL freehub with 36 teeth and 350 straightpull hubs, and the E 1800 SPLINE 30 a Ratchet LN freehub with 18 teeth and 370 straightpull hubs. Primarily, the two system wheels differ in their hubs and the freehub, although the spokes (DT aero comp II vs. DT aero comp) also have slight variations.
Both wheels are also available in the lower rim height of 23 mm (ER 1600 SPLINE 23 / E 1800 SPLINE 23). While the 30 mm high E 550 RIM rim has been aerodynamically optimized to offer you either more range or speed, the 23 mm high aluminum rim is slightly lighter, less susceptible to wind, and cheaper.
For all four wheelsets or rims: The generous inner rim width of 22 millimeters means the aluminum hook rims pair especially well with wide tires (starting from about 28 mm), improve the ride feel at low tire pressure, reduce rolling resistance, and thereby increase versatility in terms of comfort and traction.

DT Swiss AR 1600 SPLINE 30 Review
Several weeks before the official product launch, Bikeboard.at received a set of AR 1600 SPLINE 30 wheels for review. We immediately photographed them, weighed them, mounted easy-rolling TLR tires, filled them with sealant, rode them, and pounded them over the cobblestone streets of the world or rather, the Kahlenberg.
And the result is impressive! Review coming soon ...
