  • AI generated translation
  • AI-generated translation refers to the process of using artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning models, to automatically translate text or speech from one language to another. These systems, such as neural machine translation models, analyze large datasets of multilingual content to learn patterns and associations between languages. The generated translations are based on statistical probabilities and context learned during training.

The Challenge Criterium RS TLR is known to be an extraordinarily supple, handcrafted Tubeless-Ready Clincher with a high TPI, plenty of grip, and low rolling resistance. Its list price may seem outrageously high - but in return, its buyers are supposed to be delighted with better rolling characteristics and higher puncture protection than those offered by competitors like Conti, Schwalbe, and Co. This fact is also confirmed by the independent test bench results from Bicyclerollingresistance.com (see screenshots below). In terms of weight, rolling resistance (RoWi), and puncture protection, the Challenge is at least ahead in the lab, and it also allows for higher pressures, which makes it particularly interesting for time trialists or triathletes. The only concession it makes is in wet grip, although its performance in this area is by no means bad, just average.

Johannes Krenn, better known as Bikeboards' Dr.Hannibal, grabbed a set in 25C and tested the Italians for several months to see if they live up to their promises in everyday practice.

WTF is Dr.Hannibal?

Our Dr. Hannibal is known as a discerning connoisseur when it comes to road bike tires. Following the motto "Every ride could turn into a race," he is always eager to ride high-performance tires to give away as few kilometers per hour or degrees of lean angle as possible. Moreover, the sole contact point between the bike and the often poor asphalt makes a significant difference in comfort and performance, especially with stiff frames and equally stiff wheels. However, he equally despises sluggish, heavy tires as well as thin skins that produce a puncture at every other pothole or are worn down to the carcass after 1,000 kilometers. Not exactly easy to satisfy our Dr. Hannibal.

So where do the handmade luxury folding tires from Challenge fit in? Well, the Italian creators claim that their Criterium RS represents the "perfect combination of speed, grip, and durability" and could shine both in training and in competitions. Let's find out!

Assembly

Taken out of the packaging, the handmade Criterium RS immediately feels completely different from fully vulcanized tires. In addition, it remains flat as a flounder and does not automatically spring into a rounded tire shape like Conti, Schwalbe, and Co.

Mounting it on Zipp 808 NSW wheels with conventional rim flanges (no hookless) was a difficult task that seemed hardly promising without a compressor and optimal technique (including tire levers and mounting fluid). Editorial note: The system-related small internal diameter of the deliberately chosen rather narrow tires, the exposed carbon rim flanges, and the wide layers of the TLR rim tape were an unfavorable combination. The tires are probably easier to mount on hookless rims; the 27 mm Challenge variant would likely make it even easier.

With the appropriate attention, however, we ultimately managed to wrestle both tire beads over the flanges and fill in the sealant. We chose the original Challenge Tubeless Milk, which looked very similar to that of Muc Off in terms of color and consistency. Unfortunately, the wheels did not become immediately airtight and we had to let both the front and rear wheels lie on their sides for half a day each. After that, however, both tires were completely airtight and remained so during the entire test period, and the system consistently held the air pressure over several days. On our Zipp 808 NSW test wheels, we measured an actual width of 25.5 millimeters at the front and back.

Mount, fill with sealant, inflate to maximum pressure, let rest on the sides for some time, break in for 25 kilometers, sealed.

In practice

After the rather elaborate assembly procedure, the first 650 kilometers went remarkably unnoticed. The Challenge RS tires rolled, gripped, and remained sealed. After that, the rear wheel was swapped to a Zipp Super 9 (non-tubeless) and I mounted the rear tire with a Challenge latex tube. On the narrower rim, the tire only measured 24.3 millimeters in width. An additional 300 kilometers including the race "Triathlon Relay - The Championship: Challenge Samorin Middle Distance" in Slovakia, where we managed to achieve a good fifth place, confirmed the previous product claims.

In the front, I rode the Criterium RS TE Tubeless with 6.5 Bar and in the rear with a latex tube and 7 Bar. After a total of 950 kilometers, only minor signs of wear on the rear wheel - without any notable cuts - are visible, punctures front and rear: 0. Compared to the Vittoria Corsa Speed, the Criterium also convey (independently of their better test stand results) a more secure feeling because they are not as thin-skinned; yet, they feel extremely supple and fast. I also find their grip to be enormously high and I could carve the corners at will, until the tires discreetly announced their limit with a quiet squealing. However, it could also be that I just imagined that - since I never slipped, let alone crashed, and of course, I cannot say with certainty where their exact limit was.

Conclusion

Challenge Criterium RS TE
Model Year: 2023
Review Duration: 3 Months / 950 km
Price: € 84.90 MSRP
+ Low rolling resistance
+ Great dry grip
+ Puncture-proof
o Sufficient wet grip
o List price
- Difficult installation
BB-Verdict: Worth every cent, if money is no object.

Fast in races, but also robust enough for training - a real competition tire that doesn't need to hide from the competition in terms of rolling resistance, grip, and puncture protection. Although patience and skilled mechanics are an advantage during installation, you will be rewarded with excellent performance and an extravagant look (= looks awesome).

The list price is very high, but it can be tolerated in light of the handcrafted construction, the low rolling resistance, the smooth handling, and the good damping properties on poor road surfaces.

The Challenge Criterium RS TE Tubeless will also be available in wider sizes next season. The exact dimensions are not yet determined, but a 30mm width can definitely be expected.
