We present the lightweight all-rounder with Mahle XS drive in the showroom and a short test and say: Gamechanger on the way!08.04.25 14:16 2072025-04-08T14:16:00+02:00The sporty all-round e-bike is designed for children and teenagers aged 7 to 14 years. It is available in two sizes (24 and 26 inches) and allows young riders to expand their range of movement and gain more independence.
The Woom Explore e is now available online and at participating retailers in Austria and Germany. With prices of €1,599 for the Explore e 5 and €1,699 for the Explore e 6, the Easter Bunny will certainly need to stretch a bit; however, in the world of children's e-bikes, these prices are considered relatively attractive.
Lightweight, safe, and powerful were the key words that the product designers, led by Daniel Klobouncnik, included in their design brief. And with a weight of just 12.7 kg (size 5 – 24 inches) and 13.2 kg (size 6 – 26 inches), the new production model is indeed one of the lightest all-round e-bikes currently available for children on the market.
The newcomer clearly does not aim to be the most colorful. The only color option currently available is dark gray.
Bye, bye limits. Hello independence
Woom Explore eLightweight battery and hub motor
On the motor side, the Explore e is equipped with the high-quality XS drive system from the German manufacturer Mahle. The X30, integrated into the rear hub, weighs only 1.7 kg and provides support up to a speed of 25 km/h – and according to Woom, it does so almost silently, ensuring that children are not distracted while riding.
The three support levels are tailored to the riding skills and needs of children, according to the manufacturer. They can be selected directly on the battery or switched via the Mahle SmartBike app – but not from the handlebars, to avoid distractions here as well.
The heart of the system is the external eX1 battery from Mahle in a compact water bottle format. It is easy to remove, can be charged via USB-C cable, and, with a range of up to 50 kilometers, is designed to enable longer rides.

In terms of safety, not only has the pedal assist been regulated to be particularly smooth and intuitive. Powerful disc brakes are also on board to ensure that the ride can always be brought to a controlled and confident stop.
“The motor control software was a new level in product development for us, alongside the physical product,” says designer Kloboucnik. Various additional features, such as the individual adjustment of pedal assist to the abilities of children, the recording of various riding parameters, and the option for a detailed route analysis, can be accessed via the app. Reducing the assist power is also possible.
The frame geometry of the all-round e-bike is, of course, ergonomically optimized and aims to provide a slightly stretched seating position with plenty of comfort – ideal for longer rides.
In the still-growing market for e-bikes, Woom naturally wants to join in with its latest development. Marketing manager Nicole Lunzer also emphasizes social elements: "The woom Explore e is more than a sporty all-round e-bike – it changes the mobility of the whole family and creates experiences that will be remembered. Children and teenagers can tackle longer and steeper routes with an e-bike, making everyday mobility much more flexible. This means more freedom and independence – both for children and for parents. And it boosts the self-confidence of the riders. We are therefore firmly convinced that e-bikes contribute to an active lifestyle. Because those who enjoy riding will ride more often. And those who ride more often move more.”
With the help of Alva, a 9-year-old occasional biker, we put it to the test and actually have to agree with the marketing manager. What else our first review revealed, what we initially stumbled over, and what caught our attention can be found in the following test report!

Size selection and basic settings
Our test pilot Alva is 9 years old, 136 cm tall, and has an inseam length of 65 cm. She prefers a rather low seating position so that she can securely reach the ground with both feet when stopping.
When choosing the appropriate frame size, we referred to Woom's geometry chart: The Woom EXPLORE e 5 is recommended for children between 7 and 11 years old and a height of 130 to 145 cm. The minimum saddle height is 664 mm, and the maximum is 817 mm. A direct comparison with Alva's non-electric kids' MTB – also with 24" tires – showed that she is on the lower end of the recommended range for the EXPLORE e 5. This leaves plenty of room for growth – an important factor for children, whose growth often occurs in spurts, and who ideally should be able to use a bike for several years.
The bike was ordered and delivered to the office a few days later.
The assembly was extremely simple. The often annoying question about the optimal saddle tilt and the appropriate offset resolved itself: The ergonomically shaped saddle has a fixed tilt of about 0 degrees in the middle and slightly rises towards the back – similar to the saddles from SQlab. This ensures a stable, comfortable seating position. At Alva's desired seat height, the saddle post extension was about 6 cm, with 9 cm of room left until the maximum possible extension – also a plus point in terms of growth potential.
Practical: The handlebar can be individually adjusted both in tilt and height, meaning it virtually grows – both with the child and with the saddle extension.
There was, however, a small problem when charging the Mahle eX1 battery via the supplied Energy Hub: For some inexplicable reason, the charger initially failed to fully charge the battery. Various USB-C cables, different adapters, and the laptop were tested—but the result was always a battery that was only half charged. It was only Apple’s 20-watt USB-C Power Adapter (12V, 20W) from the iPad that provided the necessary power, and after a few hours, the battery was finally fully charged.
Tip: It’s best to use the Energy Hub (according to the manual, max. 20V-5A, up to 100 watts) with the short USB-C cable included in the package and a high-quality power adapter (at least 20 watts). Weak power supplies or cables that are too long likely lead to charging interruptions due to thermal reasons.
The hydraulic disc brakes impressed with a clearly defined bite point, allowing us to adjust the lever reach even closer to the handlebars – ideal for small hands with shorter reach.
The included platform pedals also made a solid impression. However, as usual, we installed our Tatze Contact CNC Kids Pedals with screw-in pins. While Alva has to be a little careful with her shins during the first ride, the feet then feel glued in place – whether wearing sneakers or kids' boots, whether on asphalt, gravel, or forest floor.
Wow, this is so gray.
... and what rhymes is good.In practice
All Woom EXPLORE e models are equipped with the new Mahle XS drive system, which provides support up to a speed of 25 km/h and enables particularly lightweight integration into existing frames thanks to its external battery. The system consists of the X30 hub motor with 45 Nm, the external eX1 battery with 171 Wh in the format of a range extender, and the XS Smart Controller, which sits under the bottle holder and connects the motor and battery. Woom specifies a range of up to 50 km – with a lightweight rider, even more may be possible.
The operation is child’s play: The drive can be switched on and off via the battery at the push of a button, and the support level can be selected. An LED bar indicates the mode and battery level - from white (off), green (level 1), orange (level 2) to violet (maximum support). All levels can also be individually adjusted via the Mahle app.
We started cautiously with level 2, but soon Alva was riding only on violet - because it was fun and because the range was actually not an issue.
The X30 drive operates pleasantly quietly – while it was audible in calm conditions and at low speeds, it almost completely disappeared acoustically as soon as ambient noises like wind or rolling sounds were present. Only at full support did the operating noise become more noticeable, but only if one specifically paid attention to it.
The X30 unfolds its greatest power from the middle. When starting, it reacts rather gently – a clear advantage for Alva. This allowed her, even as an inexperienced off-road rider, to start controlled from a standstill on steep sections and quickly gain confidence in the system.
Another plus point: the excellent grip of the Tatze children's pedals. Thanks to the pins, the foot stays where it belongs right from the start – even if the pedal is not hit precisely. Even on rough terrain, Alva was able to pedal cleanly from the first crank revolution without slipping off the pedals.
That was so much fun.

BB verdict: | A potent e-gravel bike with flat handlebars that excites not just kids. |
Ergonomics & Geometry: Comfortable. On the Woom EXPLORE e 5, Alva could easily reach the ground with her feet, even though getting on and off felt a bit unusual at first - the higher weight compared to the lightweight kids' bike was noticeable. However, after a few times mounting the bike, this was quickly forgotten. The grips felt comfortable in her hands, and even the saddle caused no pinching or discomfort - which is not always a given in this age group.
Brakes: Top-notch. Even with one or two fingers, they could be reliably modulated, and the remaining fingers always rested securely on the grip. The levers were easy to reach, and the distance to the handlebars could be individually adjusted. Even during hard braking maneuvers: no pinched fingers.
And the best part? A two-hour tour with over 300 meters of elevation gain - something that would normally be impossible for Alva - turned into a fun family outing. Even Dad had to sweat: on moderate 5% slopes, it took more than 300 watts to keep up with his daughter's relaxed pace. And on 15% inclines? Purple support mode, lowest gear, off she went - Alva didn't hold back, leaving Dad in her dust.
In the end, the all-important question arose: Which bike should we take for the ice cream ride next weekend - MTB or e-bike?
Alva: "Definitely the e-bike, it's way more fun. I've never ridden so much uphill and downhill before!"
An honest interim conclusion - and probably not the last time Dad will be left out of breath on the climb.
