  • AI-generated translation refers to the process of using artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning models, to automatically translate text or speech from one language to another. These systems, such as neural machine translation models, analyze large datasets of multilingual content to learn patterns and associations between languages. The generated translations are based on statistical probabilities and context learned during training.
In the long-term review, the new Rose Backroad CF shows how uncomplicated bikepacking can be when the lighting system, power supply and luggage solutions are already integrated as standard.02.02.26 08:38 195

With the new Rose Backroad CF 2026 the Bocholt-based company has put a true adventure bike on knobby tires – designed for long self-sufficient tours far from any power outlet. Instead of making compromises, the "Unsupported" carbon model relies on well‑thought‑out solutions for self-suppliers: SON hub dynamo, integrated power bank, USB-C port under the stem, hidden storage in the frame and custom‑fit frame bags with a Fidlock mechanism supplied from the factory. Once you've chosen color and size in the online shop, you can start the adventure immediately after receiving it without any further fiddling or DIY.

Shortly after its presentation at the Rose Adventure Summit in the Dutch National Park Veluwezoom, a Backroad CF 2026 in size Medium reached us for an extensive long-term review over autumn and winter.

 Bikepacking 'all-inclusive' out-of-the-box.

Appearance, equipment & build quality

The 2026 version appears angular, solid and self-assured. The frame and seat tube look more voluminous, which not only improves stability but also benefits the bags: the bags integrate aerodynamically into the frame profile. Only the top-tube bag is not entirely convincing. Admittedly it sits neatly and fits perfectly on the wide top tube, but it is built relatively low. A few bars or tools will fit, the phone probably won't.

To remove it, the bag is slid to the left. However, this can be problematic if you swing your right knee forward when starting off or accidentally bump into it while stationary. Instead of the magnetic Fidlock adapters on the top tube, classic screw mounts can be used if needed, so any top-tube bag can be mounted.

Rear racks and matching mudguards are available in Rose's accessory range — as are various mounts for the fork. The fork legs are fitted with sturdy, through-threaded inserts and can carry up to 3 kg per side.

Inside the downtube is a spacious storage compartment that benefits from the voluminous tube shape.
The Busch+Müller powerbank is secured there rattle-free with a hook-and-loop (Velcro) strap.
Above it there is enough room for a long tool pouch for an inner tube, tire levers and a mini pump.

Power supply & lighting: well thought-out with minor weaknesses

The USB-C port under the stem supplies bike computers, smartphones, or other USB devices directly with power from the power bank. However, the headlight itself cannot be powered from the power bank and runs exclusively on the dynamo.

The actual centerpiece of the power supply is a SON 28 hub dynamo.
The energy produced can power either the lighting or the Busch+Müller power bank with 5,000 mAh capacity.
A switch in the right handlebar bend allows selection between freewheel, lighting or charging mode.
Both at the same time is not possible.

There is criticism of the cable routing: The three heavily sealed cables from the shifter exit the underside of the handlebar and run along the outside of the handlebar bend under the bar tape. Depending on the tape thickness you can feel the cables when gripping. Internal routing all the way to the center of the handlebar would have been the far more elegant solution.

Frame workmanship & details

Frame and fork are well finished.
The seatpost, headset and cable integration are well thought-out, well sealed and rattle-free.
The chainstay protector is rubberized and the chainstay is reinforced with a small metal plate around the chainring.
The seatpost is excellently integrated and does not creak.
The mechanism is protected by a flexible plastic cover.
All cables run cleanly and silently inside.
The lid of the storage compartment is also well sealed and securely locked.
Nothing here wiggles or rattles.

The maximum system weight is 120 kg, so enough for most riders including bike and luggage; however, it could get tight for riders over 95 kg.

The factory-installed 180 mm front brake rotor underlines the long-distance and luggage-carrying focus. In addition, the frame offers increased tire clearance up to 53 mm. Our review setup with Schwalbe G-One Overland Evo in 50C showed that, despite the wide tyres and adjusted geometry, the toe overlap remains minimal.

Rose Backroad CF "Unsupported"

The Backroad CF "Unsupported" is the top model of the carbon range and is delivered with a mechanical Shimano GRX 820 1x12 groupset. Rose deliberately opts for the mechanical variant, because at a total price of €4,400 including a frame bag, top-tube bag, hub dynamo, Supernova lighting front and rear, and a rechargeable B+M powerbank the package is not only practical but also extremely attractive price-wise.

When it comes to the wheels, pragmatism takes precedence over lightness: the aluminum models with a 27 mm inner width are by no means featherweights, but they impress with stability and durability — even after heavy impacts under full load.

Let there be light

The Supernova M99 DY PRO is the first dynamo-powered LED headlight with high beam and German road-legal approval. Thanks to innovative control electronics and a matrix of 9 power LEDs, it delivers up to 1,000 lumens and 200 lux – values that until now were reserved for high-performance e-bike headlights. Once mounted, the headlight is completely maintenance-free. It automatically adjusts the light output according to speed and lights up while riding as soon as the SON hub dynamo is activated via Supernova-Powerswitch.

It is complemented by the Supernova TL3 MINI taillight. Ultracompact, waterproof and lightweight, it provides an extremely bright, homogeneous light signature with high recognizability thanks to high-density LED technology.

Built into the down tube, just above the bottom bracket, is the Busch+Müller K-Werk, a high-performance powerbank with a connection for the hub dynamo. The integrated 5,000 mAh lithium-ion battery stores the power produced by the dynamo and supplies it smoothly and with little fluctuation to devices such as smartphones, GPS units or action cameras — and of course also while stationary.

The housing is splash- and rainproof, and the USB cover protects against dirt and moisture. A five-stage LED indicator shows the charge level. In addition to charging from the dynamo, the powerbank can also be charged conventionally from a mains outlet via micro-USB.

Technical specifications:
• 5,000 mAh lithium-ion battery (approx. 275 g)
• 5 V / 1.9 A output via USB at the K-Werk or USB-C beneath the stem
• Rechargeable via the SON dynamo (6 V AC) or micro-USB
• Dimensions: 101 x 65 x 38 mm

Geometry: bigger, more relaxed, more confident

The relaxed, slightly upright riding position of the predecessor has basically been retained. The geometry, however, was adapted to wider tires and the larger tube diameter. Stack and reach have grown slightly; overall the frame is noticeably larger. Anyone who previously stood between two sizes should now opt for the smaller one. Our review bike in size M fit very well at a body height of 175 cm and an inseam of 84 cm – a Small would also have been equally harmonious with a longer stem.

The riding position is sporty-relaxed, with high directional stability and sufficient comfort, not least thanks to the 50 mm wide tires. Up to 53 mm of tire clearance opens up additional reserves for rough terrain and an extensive bikepacking setup.

Unladen, the bike remains surprisingly agile despite the longer wheelbase. The round handlebar is functional, not overly flared, and offers many options for mounting accessories. Those who want a sportier feel can still 'slam the jam' the stem to lower the front. Only the spacer with the integrated USB-C port always has to be taken into account.

Riding impression: confidence rather than a racing feel

The Backroad CF Unsupported is neither a gravel racer nor a particularly versatile all‑rounder, but an adventure bike uncompromisingly designed for stability and control. With or without luggage the Backroad feels direct, but not particularly lively, which is unsurprising given its weight, solid components and wide tires. Instead, the bike conveys a high degree of safety and confidence. In fast descents it runs like on rails; on gravel and forest tracks it remains predictable at all times. Even lighter trails are easily rideable, provided you’re willing to actively steer and guide the bike a bit.

Rollin'

Similarly, the Rose G30 aluminum wheels with a 27 mm internal width are no lightweights, but they feel indestructible. Especially in the bikepacking context, that’s a real advantage. Tubeless-ready, but come equipped with tubes from the factory.

The combination with the 50 mm-wide Schwalbe G-One Overland works excellently. Even at only 1.5 bar (with a 75 kg rider) the tire offers a lot of grip and comfort. On asphalt the tire rolls a bit more slowly, but on firm or loose ground it shows strong traction. Only in deep, sticky mud does it struggle.

Our only flat in the review was caused by a wooden thorn. The tube didn’t stand a chance; with tubeless it probably would have been less of an issue.

Shiftin'

Shifting is handled by the mechanical Shimano GRX 820 in a 1x12 configuration (40 teeth up front, 10–51 in the rear). The groupset works reliably, is low-maintenance and fits well with the self-support concept — nevertheless, on such a high‑quality adventure bike we would have preferred to see the new GRX Di2 1x12. The better-shaped levers and the electronic shifting precision clearly speak in its favour from our point of view.

Rose argues for simplicity and fewer potential failure points. We would still prefer to pack the charger rather than a spare shift cable, especially since recharging on the road would even be possible directly on the bike. Anyone wishing to convert would only need STIs, a rear derailleur, a battery and the appropriate charger.

Lighting system: rear, low-beam and high-beam lights

A real asset is the Supernova lighting system with the always-ready M99 DY Pro front headlight and the TL3 MINI rear light. The extremely bright dynamo-powered headlight scores with a wide light signature for maximum visibility in the near and mid range. The reach of the low beam is somewhat limited, but at typical touring speeds this hardly matters. At higher speeds the high beam can be activated via a separate button.

Important to know: Below about 15 km/h the dynamo's power is no longer sufficient to supply the high beam continuously. The headlight may then start to flicker or go out briefly. Anyone who rides a lot in city traffic or waits at traffic lights should therefore switch back to the low beam in good time.

BB verdict: Bikepacking without detours: order, hop on and set off self-sufficiently.

The Rose Backroad CF GRX 820 Unsupported is a gravel bike uncompromisingly geared toward adventure and self-sufficiency, performing confidently on long tours and mixed terrain. With a well-thought-out power supply, powerful lighting, generous storage and up to 53 mm tyre clearance, it handles being fully loaded exceptionally well. At the same time, thanks to a relaxed riding position, high tyre comfort and a successful mix of composed stability and good agility, it’s a lot of fun on an after‑work spin in the woods even without bikepacking gear.

Not a racing machine, but a reliable partner for anyone who wants to travel off the beaten path. Order, hop on and set off – that’s how modern bikepacking should work. If, however, you follow a race-oriented approach, you’re still better off with the Backroad FF.

Tuning tips: convert the wheelset to tubeless and fit more comfortable bar tape. If you want to save noticeable weight and can temporarily do without the Supernova lighting, install a lightweight carbon wheelset with Schwalbe G‑One R 45C tyres from the gravel racer.
