The heart of the cross-country e-bike is the new BHZ Light-Assist motor, which was specially developed for BH by the German company SEG Automotive and is manufactured in the northern Spanish SEG plant, not far from BH's headquarters. The bike proudly carries the "Made in Portugal" label, continuing the company's over hundred-year success story.
BH Bikes
Beistegui Hermanos S.A., founded in 1909 by the three brothers Cosme, Domingo, and Juan BeisteguiThe iLynx Race is, in short, the motorized version of the successful and World Cup-tested Lynx Race, an XC and marathon blade par excellence.
With the 2.1 kg lightweight motor and the 120 mm Fox suspension, the Light-eMTB variant promises an even broader range of use, from leisurely tours to fast technical trails off the bike parks. For the latter, the iLynx is also available in a trail variant with 150 mm of travel.
Now let's dive together into the depths of the data sheets and facts.
The frame
What immediately catches my eye as a visually sensitive person is the clean aesthetics of the iLynx Race.
This is mainly due to the beautifully integrated 630 Wh battery and the compact motor. The discreet control via the iRemote and the cables and lines routed through the stem contribute to this as well.
The seat clamp integrated into the top tube is the logical consequence of this design language. The side profile of modern mountain bikes, whether with or without a motor, is increasingly drifting, at least in terms of cables and lines, towards a road bike cockpit.
The massive axle at the main pivot point of the bearing is said to provide 30% more torsional stiffness compared to the previous model - and this despite the competitive frame weight of 2,065 g including the shock absorber.
HCIM (Hollow Core Internal Molding) is the manufacturing process used to produce BH's high-end frames. This process transforms a super-lightweight stack of precisely cut and carefully laid high-modulus carbon fibers and mats into a mountain bike frame that withstands powerful roots on descents and delivers solid watts on climbs.
The frame geometry, as befits a marathon bike, is not overly downhill-oriented and, with a 68° head angle and 430 mm chainstay length, would more likely be counted among the agile bikes in the twisty forest trails.

The motor
The design on the handlebar is quite impressive. The iRemote is a great feature with its minimalist 4-LED display, a plus and minus button, and a power button. What more do you need? Especially when, as only a few motor manufacturers do, the system is kept open for a Garmin connection. This allows the Garmin to be ideally used as a display for the riding modes and other system statuses.
With the BH iConnect app, motor characteristics and support levels can be adjusted.
SEG Automotive specializes as an automotive supplier in high-quality, reliable components across all areas of mobility, from car windshield wiper motors to larger hybrid drives and small generators. Accordingly, the partnership plans between BH and SEG were ambitious.
With a motor weight of 2.1 kg and a torque of 65 Nm at a continuous output of 250 W and a peak power of 500 W, the SEG motor is definitely among the most competitive in its class in terms of power-to-weight ratio.
A special feature of the BHZ is the control system, which monitors torque, speed, and cadence at a frequency of 1000 measurements per second and optimizes motor regulation accordingly - from the smooth fade-in and fade-out at the 25 km/h speed limit to the motor pre-tensioning on inclines. The latter is intended to significantly ease starting on climbs.
A nice and not insignificant detail is the 5-year warranty that BH provides on the motor.
The battery
630 watt-hours at 2.6 kg battery weight is a decent size for a lightweight e-bike drive unit. Such a motor-battery combo would have cost us significantly fewer reserves during our autumnal gravel tour from Loisium to Loisium than the 360 Wh from the Trek Domane+.
All BH iLynx Race and Trail models feature the new battery, which is built from 21700 cells with 5.8 Ah. They form the basis.

The optional XPro DD battery with 180 Wh increases the range according to BH to up to 4,600 meters of elevation gain, although I claim that a David Valero will also crack the 5,000 meters of elevation gain with it. In any case, the BH specification in "Elevation Gain" makes more sense than any kilometer indications.
Either way, 810 Wh is a lot and is usually sufficient for day-tour-worthy horizontal and vertical ranges with a system weight of under 100 kg and corresponding bio-watts from your own legs.
The components
Let's start with the BH Evo 31 Fit stem, for which the prescribed protocol (QR code for instructions on the stem) should be followed.
Once properly mounted, it offers the advantage that with the FIT tool, an optional tool with H2.5/3/4/5/6, T25, chain breaker, and CO2 adapter can be stored directly in the fork steerer. The headset is an Acros AIF-560 with a 120° stop.
The 670 mm wide handlebar, like the wheels, comes from the company's own production (BH Evo hub and stainless steel spokes). The Maxxis Ardent/Ikon combination is a good choice for its primary use in moderately technical, fast XC trail riding, and that in a variety of weather conditions.
A chainstay protector is integrated into the frame, and the XPro battery, as well as cables for lighting, can be retrofitted.
12-speed drivetrain and the 4-piston brakes come from Shimano, with the XT having set a solid standard for decades when it comes to reliability and easy maintenance. This is complemented by the Fox suspension with a 34 fork and Float DPS shock.
The 165 mm crankset is from FSA and comes factory-equipped with 34 teeth. This should provide a good range for off-road terrain, especially with the motor and the 10-51 cassette. The seatpost is from Bike Yoke and offers 80 mm of travel in all three frame sizes.
Variants
The models BH iLynx Race Carbon and BH iLynx Trail are the first bikes from BH with the new BHZ motor from SEG.
The prices, as always, correlate with equipment and weight, starting at € 4,299 for the iLynx Trail 8.0 and going up to 8,299 euros for the iLynx Race Carbon 7.9. The top variants are also available as BH Unique, configurable in individual colors.
Common to all models is the drive unit with the BHZ by SEG motor, the iRemote control unit with Garmin connectivity, and the 630 Wh battery, which, compared to some competitors in the light e-MTB segment, should guarantee quite a bit of range. We are curious to see if we will be allowed to push one of the BHZ bikes around our home trail in the coming season.
