The exquisite 6-spoke carbon wheelset from Bike Ahead Composites, now mounted on our Cannondale Scalpel Down Country Project, has covered a good 1,000 kilometers. Across a variety of terrains - from leisurely rides to the ice cream parlor mostly on asphalt to intense trail shredding. A good time for an initial review.
It remains clear that the appearance of the sharply designed "6-spokes" attracts attention. Naturally, the Lefty at the front of our tuning project further emphasizes the exotic look. No matter where the path led this spring and summer - scrutinizing looks from colleagues and passersby were almost guaranteed. Often highly appreciative, but sometimes also marked by slight skepticism.
A pro tip for the shy: Want to strike up a conversation with like-minded, technically savvy bikers? This wheelset makes it possible, an icebreaker of the finest quality. Rarely have I had so many conversations on the trails in a season.

Bike Ahead Composites Biturbo RS 29If the interested glances become too much, the light weight of the Biturbo RS, the stiff structure, and the crisp acceleration it generates, ensure that one can quickly retreat into the underbrush. Marvelous, this acceleration, especially when I recall the standard aluminum wheelset installed!
In a subjective comparison to other carbon wheels, the riding feel is distinctive. Although less stiff and radical than its appearance might suggest at first glance, especially in tight, rocky downhill sections, the handlebars require a slightly more conscious and firmer grip. Conversely, one simultaneously benefits from a pleasant precision and directness in changing directions. A feature that one gets used to after a short time. The swift and carefree handling is thrilling time and again.
The general rolling comfort and the longitudinal damping, on the other hand, work inconspicuously well. This means that, despite all lateral stiffness, they never become uncomfortable. With a consciously made decision regarding the tires, a personal comfort setup can quickly be found. The smooth "Super Race" compound from Schwalbe proved to be an excellent combination for my preferences.
Bike Ahead Composites Biturbo RS
The Biturbo RS wheels are the sporty MTB flagships of the All ahead composites GmbH, founded in 2010. "Developed and manufactured in Germany - with the best materials and the currently highest quality manufacturing process (e.g., Prepreg Autoclave)", the Bavarians write on their homepage - and the edgy aggressive design, the wide rim mouth width of 28 mm hookless, and a low weight starting from 1,249 grams for the 29er wheelset underline that they take their mission statement seriously.

BIKE AHEAD COMPOSITES - Made in GermanyBreakdowns and incidents with the Biturbo RS?
Despite the previously mentioned light "feeling tires" from Schwalbe – the entire season was contested on Racing Ray/Ralph in said rolling resistance optimized "Super Race" compound – there were no punctures to report. Actually, 0.0 problems. A lucky coincidence? Maybe.
Certainly, also a credit to the Silca Ultimate Sealant, which did a really outstanding job. After four months, the replenisher liquid was topped up to keep the system functional, and it continued without incidents.
As a Biturbo RS rider, one generally hardly knows any problems with the tubeless system, since on one hand, a sealing tape, as with classic steel spoke rims, is omitted, and on the other hand, the reinforced hookless construction offers a flawless fit.
Over the weeks and months, any fears that the edgily aggressive drawn wheels would somehow manage the contact with merciless grounds and whipped up branches remained completely unfounded.
The robustness convinces. Also, the finish or the surface on the test wheelset continues to look almost flawless.
With Fox Dropper Post, Magura Trail SL brakes, and the wider wheelset, the Cannondale Scalpel Carbon becomes a downcountry rocket.
A critical view
So, only positive things to report? Just adulation and praise? No, not entirely! What was initially not noticed by me on the first tours, which took place exclusively on loose terrain, and only came to light later, on faster asphalt stages, is a not entirely perfect roundness at the front wheel.
Upon closer examination of this issue, it was observed that the rim has a slight vertical deviation. Since the rim ring along with the spokes is baked in one piece in an autoclave, adjusting it, as with classic rims, is unfortunately not possible. This means: One has to accept said vertical deviation in the monocoque construction form.
Although the latter is not really disturbing; as mentioned, it was not noticeable on the gravel trails. Nevertheless, the fact leaves a spark of dissatisfaction with this high-end product, along with its juicy price tag. Less sensitive individuals may not mind it. It was noticed in the review, however, and therefore mentioned here.
Not a perfectly true rotation - the slight vertical wobble on the front wheel reveals the challenge of the monocoque construction.

BB-Verdict: | Crisp and snappy eye-catcher with a beauty flaw |
If it weren't for the slight vertical trueness issue, I would rate the wheelset exclusively with top marks. As it stands, especially given the price segment, it must also accept some criticism.
Overall, however, enthusiasm clearly prevails: The direct riding feel along with the great precision fits wonderfully with the XC concept for my taste. Every crisp start is a pleasure and every break on the tour, looking at the extraordinary appearance, as well.
The general workmanship and the finish of the wheels are top-notch, their robustness accordingly.
The 28 millimeters internal rim width hits the sweet spot for mixed cross and downcountry use.
The weight, in the Lefty-compatible version, is not at record level, but considering the practical width and the extravagant setup, it's really okay.
