Challenge Getaway XP TLR

The relatively new Challenge Getaway XP TLR is considered an optimal compromise for those looking for a robust and durable gravel tire without wanting to compromise on comfort and handling. The main difference of the handmade tubeless-ready clincher compared to the still offered Getaways is the reinforced XP (Xtra Protection) puncture protection, for even longer or harder rides on and off the road.

Johannes Krenn, better known as Bikeboards Dr. Hannibal, grabbed a set in 40C and covered several hundred kilometers with it.

Our Dr. Hannibal is considered a picky connoisseur when it comes to (road bike) tires. According to the motto "Every ride could turn into a race," he always strives to ride high-performance tires to give away as few kilometers per hour or degrees of lean angle as possible. Moreover, the only contact point between the bike and often poor asphalt makes a significant difference in terms of comfort and performance, especially with stiff frames and equally stiff wheels. However, he hates sluggish, heavy tires just as much as thin skins, which produce a flat at every second pothole or are worn down to the substructure after 1,000 kilometers. Not exactly easy to satisfy our Dr. Hannibal...

The mix does the trick: The Challenge Getaway XP is equipped with the SMARTplus Compound, a special natural rubber compound with a higher hardness level designed for high mileage.

Additionally, it comes in the reinforced version with Xtra Protection (XP). The Italians understand this to mean improved sidewall protection by extending the carcass around the bead to the tread (Corazza Armor Silver), as well as an additional layer of densely woven material that runs from bead to bead (Corazza Armor Gold). This is intended to provide the tire with maximum all-around protection even in extremely challenging terrain.

As with the Challenge road bike tires from our last review (Challenge Criterium RS Review), the Getaway XP TLR Gravel tires also remained flat as a flounder after unpacking. But Dr. Hannibal's worst fears did not come true; mounting them on his Zipp 303 Firecrest Hookless was even unexpectedly easy. Perhaps it was because he had some practice with the special tire shape, or perhaps it was due to the wider carcass or the absence of rim flanges. In any case, the tires jumped into the rim beds without a compressor and landed perfectly in place without any lateral or vertical runout.

With WTB TCS sealant, the tires were immediately sealed both front and rear and remained so throughout the entire test period. Moreover, the system maintained the air pressure consistently over several days.
