Instead of tugging its ears, I, like a true origami master, fold out the side panels and then the bike-holding arms. This way the little larva in the trunk turns into a real butterfly, which with its outstretched wings even welcomes the bulkiest e-bikes.
If only I'd known earlier how handy a bike rack like this is in everyday life
Top handling in many situationsFor the third and final part of my bike transport solutions, after the Faltos trailer and the Bikestow stand I picked what is probably the most everyday- and mass-market-friendly of all the variants. Personally, the handling of earlier bike carriers never really won me over. Fiddling with the bars and adjusting to the many different bike frames and types just didn't seem practical enough for our use cases. Thule has eliminated many of these shortcomings with the Epos and solved them very elegantly. But let's go in order; first, as always, comes a look into the technical details.
Technical specifications
The Thule Epos ParkSecure is, so to speak, the spearhead of the Thule lineup and offers the most complete package of features of all Thule bike carriers. Among towbar-mounted carriers with support arms, the entry point is the Thule Velolite 2-bike carrier at € 509.95 RRP, which, at 14 kg, is a bit lighter but already foldable. At the other end is the Epos ParkSecure 3-bike carrier with reversing sensors, a mounting stand, an ABUS lock and many other features.

Unboxing of the Thule Epos
The Epos arrives pre-assembled in a fairly compact box. Opened and pulled out of the box in a matter of seconds, the bike carrier is already ready for use and reveals its qualities at first glance. With a practical carrying handle formed from the two side arms, it can be carried easily and without much effort from A to B. Thanks to its compact dimensions when folded, it can also be stored away easily. Already during the first photoshoot in the studio it becomes clear that the build quality leaves nothing to be desired — that strengthens my confidence that it will reliably look after the valuable pieces that will travel with it in the future.
Basic features and highlights
The carrier consistently focuses on ease of use and high compatibility. Individually adjustable, telescopic holding arms with strap safety allow quick loading and unloading of different bike types - from gravel bikes to heavy E‑MTBs. With a load capacity of up to 30 kilograms per wheel and extra-long wheel holders for wheelbases up to 1350 millimetres, modern equipment can be accommodated without difficulty.
A generous 25 centimetre gap between the bicycles reduces the risk of contact points; tyres up to 3.2 inches wide are accommodated as standard, and with accessories even up to five inches. The self-stabilising coupling further simplifies installation — the carrier comes fully pre-assembled in the box and is therefore practically ready for immediate use.
In everyday use, the foldable design and the tilting function including a foot pedal are helpful. The trunk remains accessible even with mounted wheels, and integrated carrying handles make transport and storage easier.
It gets technically interesting with the integrated parking sensors: four sensors monitor the area behind the vehicle and warn acoustically and visually of obstacles when reversing. The vehicle unit communicates wirelessly with the carrier, is powered via USB and also connects via Bluetooth to the smartphone app. Through it you can manage settings, use additional views when maneuvering, and install software updates directly.
Thule Epos ParkSecure experiences in everyday use
The Thule Epos ParkSecure undoubtedly represents the luxury class of hitch-mounted carriers. You notice it as soon as you carry it around and unfold it for the first time. It feels extremely solid; wherever you touch it, you can feel the high-quality workmanship, there are no unsightly burrs, and the materials appear consistently premium.
For me it is also a milestone for bicycle transport solutions in general. Not only because it is thought through down to the last detail and—thanks to numerous accessories—extremely versatile, but above all because its design with the flexible support arms enables everyday handling that could hardly be any simpler. The support arms are a real game changer compared with all the solutions I have known so far.
Here Thule has managed to deliver not only a significantly easier method of installation, but at the same time a much more flexible one. Thanks to the adjustable options you can always find a suitable spot on the frame for the upper attachment point, whether it’s a gravel bike, road bike, eMTB or child’s bike. There is enough space between the bikes so that flat pedals or wider handlebars don’t make contact anywhere.
I was also impressed by how quickly and easily the Epos can be folded open and shut and how compactly it folds up and then sits stably in the corner after use. That makes everyday life a lot more enjoyable, since I use the carrier several times a week. In many respects it is even superior to my old transport solution in the VW van, because loading and unloading on the towbar-mounted carrier is easier than loading and unloading in the double-cab van. Another advantage is that dirt and muck stay outside the vehicle.
With our two 25 kg review bikes the Epos doesn't yet reach its limit (that would be 60 kg), but in total we already come very close to the Skoda Elroq's maximum permissible nose load of 75 kg. You notice the forces at work especially when folding the two bikes away — it works impressively well despite the weight and at the same time instills confidence in the robustness of the system.
ParkSecure parking sensors
The Thule Epos is available not only as a 2- or 3-bike carrier, but also with or without parking sensors. The sensors themselves are mounted under the taillights and their function is essentially self-explanatory. The corresponding warning beep is activated when you engage reverse gear and reliably warns of impending collisions. That provides a clear increase in safety when reversing, despite the rearview camera—which becomes relatively useless because of the carrier—and is especially helpful since reversing quickly becomes confusing with three bikes on the back.
Thule Epos bicycle repair mount
At first glance the repair mount is an inconspicuous extra that, in everyday use, proves to be a really useful add-on. The additional rod turns the front support arm into a mini workstand after folding the carrier away, which makes simple maintenance on the bike easier. Above all for checking the drivetrain or the chainline, or simply for lubricating the chain, the part is incredibly practical and always along for the ride.
Thule Bike Lock by ABUS
One of the biggest disadvantages of a hitch-mounted rack is the exposure of the bikes. They are not only exposed to the weather, but above all to public view. So any little hurdle that provides a barrier to opportunistic thieves is welcome. Even though a steel cable does not represent an insurmountable barrier, the integrated lock is at least always there and, together with the other locks on the Epos (on the hitch and on the support arms), makes theft not quite so trivial.
Bike rack loading ramp
Aporops: Also included at all times is the loading ramp, which can simply be stored in the rack and, if needed, makes loading and unloading heavy bikes much easier. What would otherwise be an Olympic weightlifting feat becomes a relaxed roll-on. You can see the attention to detail here too, because the plug-in mechanism is not only simple, but its subtle snap-in action also leaves hardly any room for misuse that could cause the bike to slip off.
Advantages and disadvantages of hitch-mounted bike racks
Compared with all transport options, the trailer hitch is one of the most flexible and universal solutions and is rightly enjoying growing popularity. The only prerequisite is a trailer hitch. Roof racks have lost ground in recent times; on the one hand this is due to aerodynamic drag, which plays a major role especially for electric cars, and on the other hand to the popularity of e-bikes: nobody wants to hoist a bike weighing up to 30 kg onto the roof. Hitch-mounted carriers offer maximum comfort and everyday practicality here.
The biggest disadvantage, especially compared with transporting bikes inside the car, is the exposure of the bikes to the weather and the risk of theft. Below we'll put it in context compared with other transport solutions.
Transport solutions
| Solution | Advantages | Disadvantages | Well suited for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Towbar/hitch carrier (AHK) | Very comfortable, low loading height, good for heavy bikes/eMTBs, generally stable, little extra fuel consumption | Requires a towbar/hitch, expensive to buy, theft risk in parking lots | MTB, eMTB, families, regular use |
| VW Transporter / Van / Panel van (bike inside) | Bikes protected from the weather, more theft-secure, no extra fuel consumption from air resistance, eMTBs easily accommodated, tools/luggage come along | Expensive vehicle, takes up space in daily life, interior gets dirty | Frequent drivers, races, bike holidays, expensive bikes |
| Roof rack | Inexpensive, rear/trunk often accessible, universal | Higher fuel consumption, wind noise, underground garage/height issues, difficult for eMTBs, lifting work | Road bike, gravel bike, light MTBs |
| Trunk/tailgate rack (without hitch) | Cheaper than a hitch carrier, no lifting onto the roof | Possible contact with paint, often limited access to the trunk, stability depends on the model, eMTBs often problematic | Occasional users |
| Trailer (bike trailer for car) | Many bikes can be transported, also multiple eMTBs or a team setup, interior remains free | Slower, parking more cumbersome, requires additional trailer parking space, higher fuel consumption | Bike holidays, groups, races |
| Estate / SUV interior (seats folded down) | Cheapest solution, bike relatively protected | Front wheel removal required, interior gets dirty, limited space | Single rider, spontaneous rides |
| Pickup with bed | Quick to load, multiple bikes possible | Exposure to weather, theft risk, often needs additional securing | Shuttles, trail days |
| Enclosed box trailer | Maximum security, lots of space for equipment, bikes out of sight | Very expensive, bulky | Teams, event organizers, frequent travelers |

| BB verdict: | A game-changer in bike transport |
The Thule Epos ParkSecure unquestionably represents the luxury class of hitch-mounted bike carriers. To me it is also a milestone for bicycle-transport solutions in general. Not only is it thought through down to the last detail and, thanks to numerous accessories like a mounting stand, loading ramp and the like, extremely versatile, but above all its design with flexible holding arms enables everyday handling that could hardly be any easier. The holding arms are a real game-changer compared to any solution I’ve encountered so far.
Taken out of the garage or trunk, the Epos is ready for use in seconds. Whether you want to carry an ultralight road bike, a 30 kg eMTB or both, it makes no difference: lift (or roll) bikes onto the rack, secure them by the wheels, clamp the holder in the appropriate position — and you no longer have to worry about bulky rods, spacing issues or frame mounts. Disassembly is just as quick and the rack packs away compactly for storage.
The parking sensors work exactly as you would expect, providing an extra measure of safety when reversing. The Thule Epos ParkSecure therefore leaves little to be desired in everyday use and turns any vehicle with a towbar into a super-practical bike transporter.
