Model range and prices
Scott is launching the new Spark DC in five model variants: Spark DC Factory, DC 10, DC 20, DC 30 and DC 40. At the top sits the Spark DC Factory, with its lighter HMX carbon frame and correspondingly high-end specification. Directly below it is the Spark DC 10 we rode, featuring an HMF carbon frame, RockShox Pike Ultimate and SIDLuxe XL Ultimate with electronic Flight Attendant, plus SRAM X0 Eagle AXS Transmission. This also makes the Factory and DC 10 the two Flight Attendant models in the range.
The Spark DC 20, DC 30 and DC 40 retain the HMF carbon frame, with the specification scaled according to price point. Instead of electronic suspension control, these models use Scott's proven TwinLoc system with Descend, Traction Control and Lockout; depending on the model, Scott combines it with suspension components from Fox or RockShox and various SRAM and Shimano groupsets. All five models share the new DC frame platform, 140 mm of travel at the front, 138 mm at the rear, adjustable geometry and the key frame features. First ride impressions: Massa Marittima
Now that the official launch is over, I can reveal it: during the review rides in Massa Marittima in April, the RC wasn't the only bike I rode. After two days on the race machine, I had the opportunity to switch straight onto the Spark DC.
Uphill, it initially lacked the familiar liveliness of the RC. But that can be put down to two simple factors:
Tyre choice: Instead of the fast Maxxis Aspen, the DC rolls on a combination of a Maxxis Forekaster at the front and Rekon Race at the rear.
Suspension setup: In its factory configuration, RockShox Flight Attendant does not engage the Lock mode automatically and switches independently only between “Open” and “Trail”.
Both can be adjusted, but in the bike's standard configuration they suit its character extremely well. With the more capable suspension, you would simply overwhelm the Aspen tyres on rough terrain – unless your name happens to be Nino Schurter. An automatically activated Lock mode would also needlessly sacrifice grip and comfort on technical trails. For long tarmac or gravel climbs, the lockout can be activated manually at any time via the left SRAM Pod Controller anyway. If you want, you can simply enable the three-stage automatic mode via the AXS app.
The very first descent made one thing clear: the Spark DC is not an artificially jacked-up XC bike whose climbing performance suffers from excessive fork travel (“overforking”). It climbs with much the same assurance as the RC, just with a slightly more relaxed attitude.

Long does not necessarily mean sluggish
Downhill, the bike impresses across the board. The best evidence: Nino Schurter was still riding the RC. While he had disappeared beyond reach after just a few turns the day before, this time the gap remained within reasonable limits.
The only thing that initially took some getting used to was the standard dropper post with a generous 225 mm of travel – I normally ride 170 mm on my own bikes (for comparison: the 2019 Scott Ransom Enduro in size XL still came with 150 mm of travel).
The geometry chart also surprised me: depending on the headset setting, the reach of the XL frame I rode is around 520 mm, a good 20 mm longer than on the bikes I am used to. Had I studied those figures beforehand, I would certainly have had doubts about its agility on the twisting trails of Massa Marittima. Out on the trail, however, the geometry proves superbly balanced and astonishingly agile.

A slacker head angle, significantly longer geometry, 140/138 mm of suspension travel, a longer dropper post, burlier tyres and the option of fitting a genuinely capable shock add up to a different bike.
And yet, there is still plenty of Spark left.
Verdict
The Spark DC has enormous potential to become a bike for people who want, or can afford, to own only one. Uphill, it still rides much more like a cross-country bike than a trail bike, yet downhill it offers enough reserves that you do not have to wonder whether every rougher line still falls within its intended use. Or to put it another way: while the RC wants to know how quickly you can get from A to B, the DC seems more interested in everything else lying around between A and B. If only it had a second bottle cage mount ...
