Sram's new premium gravel group meets Trek's fastest gravel bike - we tested the duo in a speedy threesome with rider Hannes Lederer.05.05.25 09:05 227

With the new Sram Red XPLR AXS, the American component manufacturer rises to meet the increasing demand for high-performance gravel groups – and we tested it in the toughest environment: mounted on the brand-new, exceptionally fast Trek Checkmate SLR 9 AXS. A setup seemingly made for professionals on loose terrain with 2000 W on the crank - and me.

The Trek Checkmate SLR 9 AXS is the latest missile in Trek's gravel segment – a performance bike uncompromisingly designed for speed and efficiency, clearly inspired by the Madone in both technology and design. Particularly striking: the angular, aerodynamically optimized downtube, which not only looks distinctive but also significantly contributes to reducing drag.

Instead of an isolated focus on frame shapes, Trek takes an integrated system approach with the Checkmate. Frame, wheels, and tires were developed as an aerodynamic unit. The maximum tire clearance is 45 mm, while the bike rolls fastest aerodynamically with 40 mm tires.
The result, according to the manufacturer: a time saving of up to six minutes over 200 miles at the Unbound – at a constant 200 watts compared to the Checkpoint. Translated to everyday riders like me, this means: the fastest at the cake display and therefore the rider with the greatest selection.

Despite its racing genes, comfort is not left behind. This is ensured by the proven yet revised IsoSpeed system in the rear triangle, which allows vertical flexibility of the seat post: small shocks are absorbed without negatively impacting power transfer efficiency.
The Aerocockpit, also adopted from the Madone, with a slight flare offers excellent ergonomics, especially during technical descents.

The geometry is sporty but not extreme: The reach is only 1 cm longer than that of the Madone, and the stack is 1.5 cm higher – ideal for road cycling enthusiasts who want to feel at home in the gravel sector without losing their accustomed riding position.

Lightweight construction par excellence: Our test bike in size M weighs just 7.55 kg on the infallible Bikeboard scale – a top value made possible by the use of the lightweight 800-Series OCLV carbon frame, the Sram Red XPLR AXS group with integrated power meter, and the Bontrager Aeolus RSL 37 carbon wheels.

Also in terms of riding dynamics, the Checkmate is fully convincing: The shorter reach compared to the Checkpoint ensures more agile handling without compromising the stability required for gravel. A racing bike for gravel – without compromises.

Note on everyday usability: Those looking for bikepacking options and extensive mounting possibilities will not be 100% satisfied here. The Checkmate offers only the essentials – two bottle cages and minimal luggage capacity. It is a no-compromise race bike – not an adventure all-rounder.

See also our previously published review: Trek Checkmate SLR vs. Trek Checkpoint SL Gen. 3 in the Bikepacking Test^2. The comparison of the gravel racer with the gravel adventure bike in demanding bikepacking use revealed the expected differences. Nevertheless, the conclusion was more surprising than expected.

The new SramRed XPLR AXS - Technology in Detail

Derailleur: Robust Integration with UDH and Clever Features

The Red XPLR AXS derailleur consistently uses the UDH standard (Universal Derailleur Hanger) for direct mounting. This eliminates the need for the traditional derailleur hanger adapter – making the entire assembly stiffer, easier to maintain, and more precise. The new design adds about 80g to the weight compared to its predecessor, which is primarily due to the more robust construction. This is a deliberate trade-off in favor of stability and performance.

Clever features like the "Magic Wheel" are included, a free-spinning pulley wheel that protects the chain from blockages when coming into contact with branches or mud. The enlarged pulley wheels (14/16 teeth) and the significantly higher spring tension improve chain management and ensure smooth, precise operation – even on rough descents.

Compatibility: Only suitable for 1x13 setups in combination with the 10–46 T XPLR cassette. No mixing with other AXS derailleurs is possible.

Cassette XG-1391: 13-speed with 460% range

The 13-speed cassette XG-1391 (10–46 T) offers a perfectly graduated gear distribution – ideal for varying terrain. The combination of 10–46 teeth results in an impressive 460% range, which is well-suited for steep climbs as well as fast asphalt sections.

Technically remarkable: The three largest sprockets are made of high-strength aluminum, while the remaining ten are made of hardened steel – an optimal mix of weight and durability. Polymer inserts between the sprockets further reduce running noise.

A small masterpiece: Sram incorporates an additional sprocket onto the existing XDR freehub. This is made possible through clever space optimization on the derailleur (below) and sprocket overhang (above) – no more can be achieved on this standard.

Crankset: Lightweight, stiff, power meter capable

The new Red XPLR crankset is made of hollow-formed carbon arms and is about 30 g lighter than the previous version. It is designed exclusively for 1x drivetrains and is available in chainring sizes of 38–46 teeth (Gravel) as well as 48/50 teeth (Aero). The chainline is 47.5 mm, and the Q-factor is 150 mm – both optimized for wide gravel frames with high-volume tires.
The system is optionally available with an integrated power meter, which can be easily maintained or upgraded thanks to the threadmount design.

Power meter: Modular and precise

The power meter measures on both sides with an accuracy of ±1.5 % and is powered by a standard CR2032 button cell, providing around 200 hours of operation. The weatherproof housing is fully off-road capable.
Maintenance and chainring changes are quick and straightforward thanks to the modular design, without the need to replace the entire power meter.

Brake-Shift Levers: Ergonomic, connected, efficient

The new Sram Red AXS levers have been completely redesigned. The grip body is more comfortable, and the brake lever is angled outward, which makes operation in the drops significantly easier.
A real highlight is the up to 80% reduced braking force required at the hoods. Sram has moved the pivot point upward, allowing for powerful and precise braking with just one finger. The new bonus button on the inside of the hoods is freely programmable – for controlling lights, head units, or dropper posts.

Brakes: Powerful, controlled, quiet

The new two-piece calipers provide increased stiffness and reduced rubbing tendency. An offset-positioned piston simulates the effect of larger brake rotors and enhances braking performance while simultaneously reducing the effort required.
The new Centerline XR rotors stand out with lower weight and improved heat dissipation – even during long descents with luggage.

Riding Impression - The Red XPLR in the Rough

In the terrain, the potential of the new group becomes evident. The ergonomically revised STIs fit perfectly in the hand.
It was long overdue to catch up with Shimano and add bonus buttons to the STIs. However, for my hand position, these are unfortunately placed incorrectly. In the beginning, I often unintentionally triggered head unit commands while riding out of the saddle. As a result, I had 268 lap times on every ride. Only after about 1,000 km did my hand position adapt – but now it works quite well.

What is immediately noticeable: The shifting speed is finally (almost) on par with Shimano's Di2. The previous version was significantly slower, especially when switching from a road bike to a gravel bike, I always had to get used to it again – that's now a thing of the past and is really fun.

The braking performance is phenomenal. Even on rough descents, one finger is enough. Sram claims 80% less effort on the hoods and 33% less in the drops. It really hits the nail on the head.

The 10–46 gearing is ideal for my riding profile – everything from steep climbs to high-speed on asphalt fits perfectly. I briefly considered following Lidl-Trek's example and upgrading my road bike to the Red XPLR system, but unfortunately, my frame is not UDH-compatible. Maybe that's for the best – otherwise, my bank account would be empty.

Shifting remains precise, even under load or impacts. The chain barely rattles. So far, I haven't had a single chain drop. The power meter works reliably and inconspicuously.

BB Verdict: Premium racer for high-end enthusiasts.

For me personally, the Checkmate is exactly the right choice. As someone who primarily rides a road bike in the summer, transitioning to the Checkmate feels completely natural – no adjustment period needed.

On trails, it is responsive and comfortable, while on the road, it is fast and efficient like a race bike. You can immediately feel how much DNA from the Madone is in this gravel frame, without compromising its off-road capabilities.

The cockpit feels excellent in hand, the wheels accelerate effortlessly, and thanks to its low weight, the bike climbs like a rocket. The gearing is perfectly tuned – whether on asphalt or gravel, it just works.
For short bikepacking adventures, there are suitable bags from the in-house Bontrager brand. For longer adventures, however, the Checkpoint is a better option.

The only downside: the stock Bontrager tires. While they offer solid grip on hardpack, they roll – to put it bluntly – extremely sluggishly. For me, they are the slowest tires I have ever ridden. And that simply does not do justice to a bike like the Checkmate. After about 300 kilometers, I switched them out in frustration and installed the Hutchinson Caracal Race TLR. And what can I say? Since then, the Checkmate rides as it should – fast, precise, lively. Exactly what you would expect from a gravel racing machine of this class.
