  • AI-generated translation refers to the process of using artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning models, to automatically translate text or speech from one language to another. These systems, such as neural machine translation models, analyze large datasets of multilingual content to learn patterns and associations between languages. The generated translations are based on statistical probabilities and context learned during training.
BH has given its lightweight race bike a comprehensive update. A frame weight below 700 grams, improved aerodynamics and clearance for 35 mm tyres are intended to turn the new Ultralight into a versatile all-rounder. Four builds are available, starting at 4.999,90 euros.22.10.26 16:00 202

Lightweight construction and aerodynamics were long considered two very different things. While classic climbing bikes were meant to weigh as little as possible, aero race bikes focused primarily on reducing drag. Those boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred, and with the latest generation of the Ultralight, BH is following the same trend.

The Spanish brand has given its lightweight classic a thorough overhaul. Alongside an 11 % reduction in frame weight, BH claims a 12 % improvement in aerodynamic efficiency compared with its predecessor. There is also fully integrated cable routing, revised geometry and increased tyre clearance. Some of these updates come directly from the development of the aerodynamically optimised BH Aerolight.

A frame weighing less than 700 grams, yet with better aerodynamics

BH clearly has no intention of compromising with the new Ultralight.

Frame weight below 700 grams

At the heart of the new Ultralight is a carbon frame made from Toray T1100G fibres, which according to the manufacturer weighs less than 700 grams, making it around 11 % lighter than its predecessor.

It is produced using the so-called HCIM process (Hollow Core Internal Molding). High pressure during the moulding process is intended to ensure wall thicknesses that are as consistent as possible and clean internal surfaces. Excess resin and unnecessary accumulations of material are reduced, saving weight without unduly compromising stiffness.

Whether the promised figures hold true on the scales, and how the new carbon lay-up affects comfort and handling, will only become clear out on the road.

There’s a bit of Aerolight in there too

Visually, the Ultralight has moved much closer to its aerodynamic sibling. Kammtail tube profiles, a new integrated fork, the aerodynamically shaped seatpost and optimised tube junctions are intended to reduce drag.

The design was developed using CFD simulations in collaboration with the University of the Basque Country (EHU).

According to BH, aerodynamic efficiency has improved by 12 % compared with the previous generation. At 60 km/h, correspondingly less power should be required to overcome aerodynamic drag. However, the manufacturer provides no figures for the actual watt savings or the precise test conditions.

For the typical amateur rider, 60 km/h on the flat is something of a rarity anyway. There is no question that aerodynamic improvements can also deliver benefits at lower speeds, though their extent depends heavily on your speed, wind conditions and riding position.

Race geometry with more tyre clearance

BH remains true to its sporty approach with the geometry. A compact rear triangle, relatively low front end and sporty riding position are intended to deliver direct handling.

The increase in tyre clearance to 35 mm is particularly interesting. Alongside classic 28 mm road tyres, this allows you to fit significantly higher-volume rubber, which can improve comfort and traction, especially on rough tarmac and poor back roads.

That does little to change its fundamental purpose, of course: the Ultralight remains a thoroughbred road bike and wider tyres alone certainly do not turn it into a gravel bike.

For power transfer, BH continues to rely on a generously dimensioned BB386EVO bottom bracket area. This is intended to make the connection between the down tube, seat tube and chainstays as stiff as possible.

35 mm tyre clearance does not turn the Ultralight into a gravel bike

but it does broaden its range of uses considerably.

Geometry in detail

The Ultralight is offered in five frame sizes, from XS to XL. The geometry is consistently sporty, with reach figures ranging from 367 to 397 mm and stack figures from 513 to 581 mm.

The chainstays remain at 410 mm across all sizes, while the head angle varies from 71,2 to 73 degrees depending on frame size.

Integration down to the last detail

As is now standard on modern road bikes, all cables and hoses disappear into the cockpit and frame. The seatpost clamp is also invisibly integrated.

The SRAM UDH-compatible dropout is a practical touch, making it easier to source a replacement if the derailleur hanger is damaged. There are also weight-optimised thru-axles and the Planck rear light already familiar from other BH models, which attaches magnetically to the seat tube.

The latter is a neat detail for anyone who does not ride their road bike exclusively in the sunshine.

Alongside three standard colours, the Ultralight will also be available through the BH Unique programme. This lets you configure individual colour combinations and details.

Lightweight construction meets everyday practicality

With the new Ultralight, BH is following a trend seen throughout the road bike industry: the boundaries between classic climbing bikes and aero race machines are becoming increasingly blurred.

A frame weight below 700 grams certainly makes a statement, and the combination of optimised aerodynamics, modern integration and clearance for 35 mm tyres sounds thoroughly interesting on paper.

The classic climbing specialist has had its day.

The new Ultralight is intended to shine not only uphill, but also on fast sections.

Whether the new Ultralight really combines the best of both worlds will have to be established in a real-world review. The technical foundations are certainly in place.
