  • AI-generated translation refers to the process of using artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning models, to automatically translate text or speech from one language to another. These systems, such as neural machine translation models, analyze large datasets of multilingual content to learn patterns and associations between languages. The generated translations are based on statistical probabilities and context learned during training.

A sip from the beer bottle, a quick chat with his shaggy-haired seat neighbor, then Jakob dedicates himself again completely to the event. With feeling and audible pleasure in the activity, he blows into a horn. Sometimes detached and gentle in rhythm with the music that blares from specially set up speakers, sometimes brutally and loudly booming; then again in skilled crescendo and decrescendo accompanying the passing bikers, or so sustained as only brass musicians and freedivers can manage.
Beside him, Dominik vigorously swings the cowbell and his artificial Slash hairstyle, Sina squeezes the whistle so hard that her fingers become as curved as her full-body banana costume, Silke's pale pink tutu skirt bounces in rhythm with the movements with which she dances barefoot on the edge of the track.

It's Salzkammergut Trophy time again. And like every year, when Austria's largest MTB marathon takes place in and around Bad Goisern at Lake Hallstatt, the fan group Görb has taken up position at noon in the settlement just before the bridge over the Traun, which directs five routes towards the finish, but the A- and B-riders towards Hallstätter Salzberg and Gosausee.
Nearly 3,500 participants from 39 nations pass this spot throughout the day, a good thousand of them even multiple times. This provides plenty of opportunities for Jakob and Dominik, Sina and Silke, Vera and Kerstin, Mario and Mod, their children, and all the other friends, neighbors, and acquaintances who join them over the course of the afternoon, to whistle their fingers sore, blow their lungs out, dance their feet tired, and scream their voices hoarse.

Ideal conditions with a Salzkammergut flair

Just in time for the first start at 5 a.m., the rain that had softened the ground in the Salzkammergut throughout the night and during a severe storm the day before, causing worry lines on the faces of athletes and organizers, had stopped. 403 participants, including 10 ladies, had embarked on the Trophy extreme distance with its unimaginable 209 kilometers and 7,047 meters of elevation in the first light of the clearing morning sky.
Over the course of the morning, it was on to six additional mountain bike and two gravel bike distances ranging from 127 to 22 kilometers, as well as numerous special categories from unicycle over vintage to firefighter, in a challenging but unforgettable adventure.

Despite the occasionally deep soil, the athletes found ideal conditions at the 27th edition of this legendary event. This is rather unusual for this competition, as the Trophy often balances on a fine line between murderous heat like in 2023 and equally problematic snowfall like in 2009.
Key sections like the famous, over 30% steep Hallstatt Salt Mountain or the notorious downhill over the "Ochsentod" did not become flatter or easier due to the perfect temperatures and harmless clouds... just typical Salzkammergut Trophy!

The Görber fans are pretty indifferent to the weather, they come out in both rain and sunshine.
"We have it quite nice here with the shelter and our parent's homes," Silke points to a generous carport behind and two single-family homes in front of her. Together with her cousin and childhood neighbor Marie, she has organized the fan zone again this year, gathered friends, pulled out the cooler, and set up a few tables and benches.
There are snacks and drinks of all kinds, carnival streamers are as ready to hand as forks, plates, and – following a subtle hint from Mod – corkscrews. And with every unicorn and butterfly creature that joins from the surrounding houses and apartments or even from further away, the cheers grow louder.

Fabulous Austrians

Those who did not notice the exuberant hustle and bustle in Görb due to high speed were the leaders of the A-distance. They passed the spot even before the locals started their service.
The favored Tyrolean winner of the previous year, Philip Handl (Team Ischgl Simplon), predictably left nothing to chance, made the first gap at Raschberg, and after a largely solitary race at the front, won the day with a time of 9:46:19, even though he consciously slowed down on the descents. "At times it was extremely slippery, so I didn't want to take any risks," explained the 27-year-old at the finish.
Only last year's third-place finisher, David Schögl from Styria (1OF1 Cycling Team), could largely keep up with the pace of the strong Tyrolean and finished eight minutes behind in second place. Michael Kampelmüller from Upper Austria (Intersport Mühl4tler Bike Team) landed in third place.
The entire podium of the extreme distance and even nine more places among the top 15, including last year's runner-up and recently second-place finisher at RAAM, Lukas Kaufmann (6th), were thus in red-white-red hands.

In the women's category, the crown discipline also went to the Tyrolean previous year's winner Bianca Somavilla (deniflcycling.com). She won in a time of 11:52:33 hours, but faced a tough challenge from last year's runner-up Anna Bicskei (Glampia Cyprus Team), as the Hungarian even led during the middle third of the race, was only reeled back in approaching Roßalm, and remained within striking distance with only a five-minute deficit up to the finish line. Third place went to another Austrian, Sonja Eckhart (1OF1 Cycling Team).

Everywhere there is a nice spot, people stand and cheer

C-Winner Sabine Sommer on the great atmosphere along the course

A much-celebrated home victory by Irina Fettinger (MTB Club Salzkammergut) occurred on the second longest distance of 127 kilometers and 3,758 meters of elevation. The local hero won in an impressive time of 6:48:14, ahead of Cornelia Holland from Lower Austria (Naturfreunde Wilhelmsburg). Third place went to the Polish rider Agnieszka Kachel (Rybczynski-Bikes Remmers Team).
In the men's category, as last year, Karl Markt (Shimano Austria), who had retired from the cross-country circuit, claimed the victory. The Tyrolean won in 5:42:08 hours, ahead of Christopher Schwab from Vienna (Nora Racing Team). Third place also went to a biker from Vienna, Andreas Waldmann (RC ARBÖ Garmin Merida Polizei Wien).

Mood from early till late

In the party zone in Görb, big names are irrelevant. Here, everything that has wheels is cheered on without exception - whether it's just one, like the Muni-Cyclers, or two, like the majority of participants; regardless of whether the start number is yellow, green, or black, and sometimes it doesn't even matter if they are actually in the race or just passing through with heavy holiday luggage or light support staff baggage.
Indeed, the locals have their favorites: brothers on the 200 km race, cousins and friends on the 100 km, acquaintances from Goisern and the surrounding area on all the distances that the Salzkammergut Trophy offers. But they cheer enthusiastically for everyone and anyone who passes through their fan zone.
They dance the Macarena and ride whooping and swaying in an imaginary rubber boat, wave flags, bang on a rain barrel with wooden mallets, or create waves both acoustically and physically. Special applause is given to those who hop over the small wooden ramp positioned especially at the edge.

Due to the Trophy-related road closure, her brother had initially initiated the ruckus, Marie explains. After a few years quieter due to starting a family, there has recently been more momentum because it's simply part of it. Alcohol consumption - in the past, riders were even handed beer in cups for fun - has been significantly reduced.
"If someone from the back stops and asks, of course, they get something. But our main focus is on supporting the sport," explains the woman dressed as a mix of a Mexican pistolero and Hawaiian Teletubby, who defines herself as the "worst cyclist in the world."

And for this, the group also receives quite a bit in return. At least a fleeting smile flits across every face, no matter how exhausted or dirt-smudged, with most participants reacting more visibly and audibly: raising their fists, cheering back, shaking their heads in disbelief with a broad grin, and giving a thumbs-up.
It is, in Görb as well as everywhere else along the route, where locals and guests, innkeepers and hikers, helpers and caretakers come together accidentally or intentionally to cheer, a give and take, a continuous exchange: trading applause for fresh energy, offering encouragement and getting the good feeling of being part of something very special.

 Exchange applause for fresh energy

This applies first and foremost to the hundreds who, towards the end of the long Trophy day, crowd into the Goiserer market square to be part of that moment which over the past years has become the secret highlight of the event.
Crowded together, people stand shoulder to shoulder, squeezing against the barriers of the finish chute to welcome the last returnees of routes A, B, and C, as well as the longer of the two gravel marathons.
The drumming of the countless hands on the banners grows louder, the announcements from the trio of moderators become more euphoric, the music from the DJ more whipping; until finally at exactly 21:21, Petr Dvořák, as the last finisher, returns to Bad Goisern under Bengal fires and greeted by the Trophy devil himself from the proverbial hell of the extreme distance.
The Czech is not particularly proficient in English, and in any case, he is probably at a loss for words in the face of this scene. But what is happening in his heart, as none other than Trophy winner Philip Handl presents him with the red devil's trophy for the last place of honor, is clearly visible in his eyes.

OK-Chef Gregor Lindpointner provides the corresponding, emotional closing words. "At the Salzkammergut Trophy, almost everyone in the Dachstein Salzkammergut holiday region is on their feet, the athletes are celebrated as heroes. The fact that the major competitions went so well today is mainly thanks to the good will of Petrus and especially to the approximately 1,000 volunteers. They are the ones who make it possible for such incredible performances as seen today to be achieved by the participants. This race is pure goosebumps for us organizers, for the helpers, and of course for the participants."
