On August 25, 2024, the Kufsteinerland Cycling Marathon entered its 8th round - and kept both spectators and participants on the edge of their seats. International participants from 25 nations started at the Upper Town Square in Kufstein and tackled the three different routes, all accompanied by the impressive panorama in and around the Kufsteinerland. The weather was also on the participants' side: Although the clouds increased continuously after the starting shot at 7:30 a.m., the majority of the participants were able to stay dry.
From 3 make 1: tactical victory attack
As a highlight, the marathon course once again proved to be the star. On the demanding 120 km course with 1,800 meters of elevation gain, a leading trio formed during the second major climb up to Brandenberg, riding ahead with a clear lead: Tyrolean Jonas Holzknecht, his compatriot Max Kirschner, and German Pascal Wiederhold.
With constant overtaking maneuvers and alternating breakaway attempts, the leading trio made their way through the Unterinntal back towards Kufstein. However, Max Kirschner used the final slight uphill in the Kufstein forest to finally break away from his companions. His powerful attack just before returning to the fortress city left the competition with no chance – Kirschner continuously expanded his lead and reached the finish line at the Oberer Stadtplatz in Kufstein after 3:07:32 hours as the first. Jonas Holzknecht secured second place on the podium 17 seconds behind, and Pascal Wiederhold finished third with a 21-second deficit.
For the women, the lead was clear after a short time: Elisabeth Fladerer broke away from the other participants early on and tackled the marathon course accompanied by a group of men who formed around her during the race. Fladerer dominated the field until the finish and celebrated an impressive solo victory in a time of 3:29:13 hours.
The second-placed Larissa Stupniki and the third-placed Martina Putz crossed the finish line head-to-head, with a respectful gap of nearly four minutes behind the winner.
Red-white-red podium at the Lake Circuit
From the 95 km long lake circuit, an Austrian winning team emerged among the men: On the picturesque route with 1,160 meters of elevation gain, Johannes Lener took the lead and secured first place, Florian Dagn came in second, and Daniel Knapp third.
Among the women, the German Nina Gunther stood on the top podium as the winner. The Austrian Janine Speringer took second place, and the German Franziska Geiger third.
Cycling pleasure with a sporty twist
The 48 km long panoramic loop offered the perfect combination of athletic challenge and scenic enjoyment in the Kufsteinerland for those with a more relaxed nature. However, the relaxed character of this loop should not deceive anyone about the athletic ambitions of some participants.
Christian Schmitt, winner of the panoramic loop, crossed the finish line after just one hour and eleven seconds, closely followed by the runner-up Michael Reisecker and third-placed Maximilian Rosenthal.
In the women's category, Amy Ellinger was able to secure the victory. At just 13 years old, she was also the youngest participant in this year's Kufsteinerland Cycling Marathon.
Upper Town Square Epicenter
The supporting program at the Upper Town Square of Kufstein, where the athletes rolled to the finish line after their work was done, put the crown on the event. The successful blend of sports, culture, and Tyrolean hospitality made the 8th Kufsteinerland Cycling Marathon a well-rounded experience for all involved.
"The Kufsteinerland Cycling Marathon is indispensable in our event calendar," said Georg Hörhager, chairman of the Kufsteinerland Tourism Association. "The race has once again shown why Kufsteinerland is one of the top destinations in cycling. The combination of athletic challenge and the impressive natural scenery is unique." Frank Rietzler, organizer of the Kufsteinerland Cycling Marathon, adds: "It's not just about the competition, but about the connection between sport and nature - and of course about togetherness.
