Foreword

Of course a bicycle is the ideal means of transport for the city when it comes to getting from A to B as quickly and flexibly as possible — and it's healthy to boot. But as so often in life there are limitations. If you commute by public transport, bike transport often fails because of carriage rules or lack of space. Travelling by car? Not every bike fits in the trunk and after the nerve‑wracking parking odyssey the last few metres turn into a walk that drags on longer than any Sunday ride into the wind.

Even at the destination not everything is pure bliss. After all, the bike has to be parked and secured somewhere, and who wants to chain their high‑end bike to a lamppost? You can't always take it with you either, neither into the beer garden nor into the hotel room.

If you're thinking about an e‑scooter now: yes, you can do that. But you can also give it a miss, which in most cases is probably the better decision. Admittedly, those things can get you moving quickly through the urban jungle at up to 25 km/h, but there are a few catches.

First: Use is often a legal grey area. Depending on the city, country and scooter model you're somewhere between semi‑legal and on shaky legal ground.

Second: Safety is at best debatable. Small wheels and high speeds create a combination that on cobblestones, tram tracks or during sudden braking manoeuvres quickly turns into a failed circus trick. Added to that is poor visibility to other road users.

Third: Theft protection effectively doesn't exist. If you park your scooter you might as well hang a "Please take me" sign on it.

Sounds pretty hopeless? Don’t worry, there’s an alternative. So anyone looking for an urban mobility solution that’s compact, safe, legal and suitable for everyday use should take a closer look at the good old folding bike. It rides (almost) like an ordinary bicycle, fits in any car trunk, is allowed on most trains at no extra charge, and can, if necessary, be parked under the table in a restaurant. No space problems, no theft, no stress — and all with style.

Market check — Folding bikes: Three candidates in a short review

At Eurobike 2025 in Frankfurt – likely the last of its kind – our NoPain was able to review a colorful selection of folding bikes, with and without electric drive. It quickly became clear what it should come down to: an agile gravel folding bike with a flat handlebar, 20-inch wheels and grippy Schwalbe Billy Bonker knobby tires. An e-drive would be nice, but not a must. Making the shortlist were the Brompton G Line, the Vello Rocky and the Dahon Hemingway GR.

To keep it short: The Brompton G-Line had the smoothest folding mechanism. Ready to use in seconds (specifically: 5 seconds) and packed away just as quickly. We didn't find it particularly stylish, but beauty is, as they say, in the eye of the beholder.

Quite different was the Vello Rocky from Vienna: beautifully finished, with noticeably more stiffness when you start pedaling, but folding was... let's call it "meditative". Instead of five seconds it took sixty, and the mechanism was by no means as intuitive as the English one.

Sitting in the golden middle was the Dahon Hemingway GR. Nicely finished paint, a solid folding mechanism, a super-stiff frame, excellent handling and on top of that a really fair price. And because marketing never sleeps, I was also told that an E-Hemingway variant with motor assistance will follow in the autumn.

Guess three times what it ended up being. Right: the pragmatic compromise with a built-in 250-watt tailwind.

About Dahon

Detailansicht
David T. Hon, PhD

When it comes to folding bikes, there's no getting past Dahon. The company was founded in 1982 by the American–Taiwanese physicist Dr. David T. Hon in sunny California. Fed up with daily car commuting, he promptly decided to revolutionize urban mobility — with a bike that folds in seconds and can easily be stowed in a bus, train, or car trunk. What began as a rebellious idea is now an industry standard worldwide, headquartered in China.

More than 5 million folding bikes later, Dahon is regarded as an innovation-driven dominant player in the segment, holding over 220 patents. Production is mainly in China and the Czech Republic, while development is international — with a clear focus on practicality, durability, and everyday usability. Dahon may rarely win prizes for looks, but its bikes reliably roll over bike paths, curbs, and through crowded subways in over 70 countries.

Dahon is now also active in the e-bike sector. The company's own "Dahon-V" technology package comprises over 135 active patents and aims to make folding and e-bikes more efficient, stiffer, and more practical. The core message remains: fold, hop on, arrive.

In Europe, the brand now aims to catch up in terms of presence — with its own website (de.dahon.com), a growing dealer network, available spare-parts logistics, and direct customer support.

Dahon E-Hemingway

With the concept of a foldable SUV bike, the Dahon E-Hemingway is aimed at commuters who want everyday practicality, transport flexibility and off-road capability in a compact overall package. The aluminum frame relies on an especially stiff construction with a central Super-Down-Tube, which improves both stability and handling - especially at higher speeds and on uneven terrain.

Additional stiffening is provided by the in-house Deltech technology: a diagonally routed steel cable increases frame rigidity by up to 15 percent, reduces material stress and improves power transfer. According to the manufacturer, these structural measures are said to enable a "Speed Boost" of up to ten percent.

The folding mechanism is solidly executed and designed for daily use. Despite its SUV character, the bike can be folded compactly and transported.

Motor and drivetrain

The electric drive consists of a 250-watt rear-hub motor with a maximum torque output of 42 newton meters. In combination with the 360‑Wh Samsung battery, which is EN15194-certified and discreetly integrated into the removable seatpost, this yields a real-world range of up to 100 kilometers with pedal assistance. For additional security, a lock integrated into the seatpost clamp prevents unauthorized persons from removing the seatpost together with the battery.

Energy management is handled by an intelligent Battery Management System with a multi-stage safety system. The slim, integrated controller sits unobtrusively in the top tube. This not only protects it from rain, dust and shocks, but also makes it much harder to locate or steal.

The factory-mounted LED lighting system at the front, which draws its power from the Samsung battery, and an LED taillight at the rear that is charged via USB are part of the standard equipment. The illumination is excellent and the front light is functionally integrated. There is still room for improvement with the taillight.

Who's folding along?

The E-Hemingway can be reduced to a very compact form in just a few simple steps. To make the process quick and tidy, it's best to follow a clear sequence:

1. Lower the saddle
First, open the quick-release clamp of the seatpost and slide the saddle all the way down. The underside of the post then acts as a support foot and stabilizes the bike in the folded position.

2. Fold the pedals
The folding pedals are folded inward by pressing and folding them in.

3. Fold the handlebar stem
Next, open the locking lever on the stem and release the safety catch. The handlebars can then be turned and the stem folded to the side. If needed, the extension length of the stem can also be adjusted.

4. Fold the frame in the middle
Now release the latch on the main hinge. The frame can then be folded sideways until the front and rear wheels stand parallel.

5. Secure the folded end position
Finally, allow the magnetic latch to click into place so that both frame parts hold together. A quick check ensures that no parts are loose.

From folded state to riding state

In principle, unfolding works in the reverse direction of the folding process. Depending on individual settings, it may also be the case that the handlebar does not need to be rotated at all. In that case it is simply unfolded and locked.

First the magnetic latch is opened so that the front and rear wheels can separate from each other. Then the frame is unfolded completely until both parts snap securely into place. After that the handlebar stem is unfolded, locked, aligned and fixed at the desired height. The folding pedals are folded outward and brought into their riding position. Finally the seatpost is extended to the desired height and secured — the bike is ready for use.

BB verdict: The folding bike for everyone and any terrain.

A folding bike for anyone who doesn't want or need to choose. City or countryside? Both. Muscle power or e-assist? Both as well. Space-saving and still off-road-capable? Yes, even that. The Dahon E-Hemingway is the SUV of folding bikes and scores with a cleverly integrated battery, robust construction and surprisingly lively propulsion. 42 Nm of torque and the added frame stiffness provide decent push — even when it gets steeper uphill.

Thanks to the grippy Schwalbe Billy Bonkers tires in 2-inch width, the bike feels at home on asphalt just as much as on gravel, sand or forest tracks. In terms of range, the 360-Wh battery promises up to 100 kilometers. In urban everyday use that is, depending on leg strength and elevation profile, easily enough for one to two weeks without a power outlet. At 19 kg it's not exactly featherlight, but folded it can still be easily stowed in a car trunk, train or open-plan office.

Even though there are already numerous specialist dealers in Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Salzburg where you can see the bike in person and try folding it, it will still not be easy for many to come across one in the wild. All the more welcome is the option to order the bike directly from the Dahon EU online shop — including two years' warranty, free shipping and a 14-day return policy.

In short: If you're looking for a versatile, electrified and yet surprisingly compact everyday bike, you'll get a mature complete package here. Not a flashy gimmick, but a well-thought-out multitool on two wheels.

Black Week

The E-Hemingway is still part of the Black Friday sale and available for €1,499 instead of €1,699 – a rather enticing price for a compact electric folding bike.
