  • AI-generated translation refers to the process of using artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning models, to automatically translate text or speech from one language to another. These systems, such as neural machine translation models, analyze large datasets of multilingual content to learn patterns and associations between languages. The generated translations are based on statistical probabilities and context learned during training.
The now fifth generation of the Ultimate CF SLX impresses not only with full everyday usability and an affordable purchase price, but also sets new benchmarks in terms of performance in the mid-range class.05.06.23 08:24 702

Dear Readers! Sometimes one must face reality and realize that not every bicycle is an emotional roller coaster ride. This is especially true for the new Canyon Ultimate CF SLX, which we had the pleasure of putting through an extensive long-term review in matte black with Shimano's Ultegra Di2. Instead of overwhelming us with endorphins just by looking at it or impressing God and everyone at the cafés, the noble racer mainly shone with technical sophistication, its impressive performance, and loads of uncompromised riding fun.

A little spoiler upfront: The fifth generation Ultimate is neither a lightweight rocket nor an aero specialist or super comfortable long-distance machine, and it is certainly not an emotionally charged style icon. It is more akin to what the 911 Turbo is for Porsche: an extremely sporty all-rounder with high everyday practicality for performance-oriented racers - and moreover, with a great price-performance ratio.

A masterpiece of German engineering for riders who also seek ultimate performance in everyday life.

What you see, is what you get.

Technical Evolution: Gen5 vs. Gen4

After three years of development work, last autumn Canyon presented their fifth Ultimate generation with a successful mix of low weight, comfort, stiffness, and handling, including the well-thought-out integration of all cables, a bit more tire clearance, improved aerodynamics, and the distinctive Canyon DNA.

Increased Comfort
To achieve this development goal, on the one hand, work was done on the carbon fiber layup, the tube dimensions, and the specially developed components such as the fork, seat post, seat stays, and seat cluster, while on the other hand, the tire clearance on the frame and fork was increased.

Improved Aerodynamics
In collaboration with the aero experts from Swiss Side, the optimal parameters for the new Ultimate were first determined in simulations, then confirmed in the GST wind tunnel in Immenstadt. The result: Reduced air resistance and a measured saving of 10 watts on the frame set compared to its predecessor, at 45km/h with the same wheels and components.

Integration with full everyday practicality
The CP0018 Aerocockpit known from the Aeroad, with fully integrated cables and lines, comes as standard on all Ultimate CFR and CF SLX models, as well as on the CF SL Aero variant. The developers managed to combine the invisible cable routing with a user-friendly setup.

In the end, the three-part cockpit consists of the T-Bar and two side parts, which, including the shift/brake levers, can be detached from the 230 mm wide central section on the upper handlebar. This way, the handlebars can easily disappear into the Bike Guard or bike case. In addition to improved transportability, the cockpit is also height-adjustable without the need to cut the fork steerer.

Lower Weight Despite Higher Stiffness
Without compromising on durability, the Ultimate also sets new standards in terms of weight. Thanks to the optimized carbon layup (fiber selection, wall thickness progression, and reinforcements in key areas), the frame weight could be further reduced, even though the high stiffness of the predecessor was maintained and even increased by 15% in the head tube area.
But the further optimizations to the fork, cockpit, seat post, and clamping mechanism are also impressive. The result: 6.8 kg for the Ultimate CF SLX Dura Ace Di2 in size medium.

Geometry and Handling
At first glance, it's hard to notice the more harmonious, yet sportier geometry that the Ultimate has adopted from the in-house Aeroad. This results in increased safety without feeling sluggish.

Furthermore, the current Ultimate is the first Canyon road bike to feature "growing" chainstays. For frame sizes L, XL, and 2XL, the chainstays become proportionally longer, so that riders of larger frames can enjoy greater stability at higher speeds.

Equipment: Canyon Ultimate CF SLX 8 Di2

The Ultimate CF SLX platform features complete system integration, exclusively electronic shifting, matching power meters, as well as a mixed tire setup with narrower 25 mm tires in the front and wider 28 mm tires in the back. The wider rear tire does not have adverse effects on aero performance, while the additional volume improves comfort and provides better traction.

Geometry

Another noteworthy change in the current, fifth Ultimate generation compared to its predecessor is the revised geometry. For instance, the Ultimate SLX received sportier dimensions across all frame sizes, which are absolutely identical to those of the Aeroad at the crucial points.

The background was that it should be easier for the Canyon-sponsored professionals to choose between the Ultimate and the Aeroad, the bike that better suits the stage of the day, without having to worry about which bike fits them better.

The same now also applies to us private customers and simplifies the purchase decision, since one variable has been eliminated. However, this also means that we have to deal with a sportier geometry that was designed for racing. That is: a stretched, low, and deeply bent sitting position, which definitely makes it faster, but may not be suitable for every morphology.

In our test bike of size Medium, the new geometry resulted in an impressive top tube length of 564 mm, a rather short head tube of only 142 mm, and stack and reach values of 563 mm and 393 mm respectively (STR factor: 1.43). Together with a head angle of 73.25 degrees, a wheelbase of 988 mm, and the new SP0055 carbon seat post with 20 mm setback, it resulted in an ideally balanced racing bike suitable for both brisk group rides and chilled after-work local circuits - the back was grateful.

However, if I had wanted to compete in serious races, with my height of 175 cm and an inseam length of 84 mm, I would have definitely been better advised to go with the Small frame. To determine the appropriate frame size, Canyon recommends using the specially developed Perfect Positioning System (PPS) on the Canyon website.

* Note: The CF SLX is available in 8 frame sizes, but in contrast to the SL model series, only the size 3XS was specified with 650B wheels.

The Ultimate CF SLX in Practice

About two weeks before the official presentation, we received an Ultimate CF SLX test bike in September 2022, which was tailored to me or my touristic use. Firstly, in size Medium and two-toned (black with black accents) and secondly, with what is probably the world's (second-) best groupset, the Shimano Ultegra Di2 12-speed, which can only be surpassed by a Dura-Ace Di2.

The initial excitement was quickly followed by another positive surprise. Because the assembly was quick and easy: No sawing off the fork steerer, no Traunviertler 86-experiments when wrapping the handlebar tape, not even the headset needed adjusting, let alone having to straighten the derailleur hanger or bleed the rear brake. Top!

After the indoor shooting and our usual strict weighing, I immediately embarked on the first ride, which spontaneously - believe it or not - brought a smile to my face. Because the Ultimate literally glided over the asphalt, for which I also suspected my favorite tires, the Schwalbe Pro One Skin in 25 mm at the front and 28 mm at the back. Whether sunshine, cold, or rain - the tire rolls, the tire holds.

High everyday practicality despite sporty geometry

But the "new geometry" also fit right away, as the actual difference from its predecessor was mostly in the millimeter range and was less significant than one would expect from the 8 mm longer top tube according to the geo-table, despite a lower stack and longer reach values. How was it possible to have a more athletic, stretched, and lower riding position in combination with an even shorter wheelbase and more agile, balanced handling? A look at the table revealed the solution to the puzzle: among other things, the frame in size M received 5 mm shorter chainstays (higher agility) and a seat angle that was 0.3 degrees slacker with a seatpost with 20 mm setback (better weight distribution and more comfort).
Besides that, I personally also find it more coherent that the two racing machines Ultimate and Aeroad now stand out even more from the endurance racing bike.

Although I was not unhappy with the mounted Selle Italia SLR, I would have preferred to install my favored SQLab saddle. Unfortunately, the exchange failed because the Canyon seatpost was only compatible with round rails and the required adapters were not included in the delivery. From my perspective, this is a clear point of criticism - because with all my last racing bikes, the support worked either with both rail standards or the adapters were included.

Where there's light, there's also shadow

And with the 4iiii power meter, there was initially more shadow than light, because just after a few hours of operation, it went out, and it was not possible for me, even with various new batteries, resets, the smartphone app, and the 4iiii support, to get the power meter working again. Only a replacement crank arm from Canyon managed to solve the problem. Since the exchange, the 4iiii has mostly worked quite well, but after longer breaks in riding, it consistently had issues reconnecting automatically with one of my bike computers. Really annoying. Shortly before the end of the review, however, I was able to solve this problem because the 4iiii was mistakenly paired with one of my bike computers via Bluetooth (instead of ANT+) and the recurring connection errors were supposedly due to that. Tip: Make sure to connect your power meter exclusively via ANT+ with bike computers and use Bluetooth only for the smartphone, iPad, or desktop.

And while we're on the subject of grumbling, I would also like to mention that I found the cavity under the pre-wrapped handlebar tape, on the underside of the two screwed-on side parts of the aero handlebar in the upper grip position, to be somewhat uncomfortable. Under - underside - upper grip - uncomfortable... all unclear? Well, sorry folks, I can't describe it any better. Try taking an especially cramped upper handlebar grip on the CP0018 cockpit and feel how your fingertips sink through the handlebar tape. Of course, this does not detract from the function, but it feels odd.

Excellent handling ensures great riding fun

Let us come to the riding characteristics - last but not least - which, despite the nearly identical geometry, differ in terms of comfort from the Aeroad. This is because the SLX frame, thanks to its shape and carbon layup, has better damping (vertical compliance), which means that bumpy road sections, manhole covers, and the like hurt noticeably less than on the purebred aerodynamic machine. Nevertheless, I would like to note that this is not the most comfortable racing bike I have ever sat on. However, the Ultimate now also fits tires up to 32 mm wide, so switching from the currently mounted 25/28s to 28/30 or 30/32 mm tires promises a significant gain in comfort. Additionally, the less high-modulus carbon fibers of the SLX frame provide better shielding against high-frequency road vibrations compared to the SLR frame, which should also prevent premature fatigue in addition to producing a nicer, more solid rolling noise.

Climbing with the Ultimate is fantastic. No matter how hard I pulled on the handlebars, there was no annoying flex - neither at the ends of the handlebars, the bottom bracket, nor in the area of the head tube, the fork, or the dropouts. It was also possible to sprint solidly with full force without negatively affecting stability or precision.

But the Ultimate really became fun when blasting on the flats and on the well-deserved descent. It maneuvered nimbly in the group, easily maintained speed, and conveyed an especially secure feeling of control and precision on fast downhills. This high level of balance helps one to maintain inner calm even in more critical situations and gives the Ultimate its incomparable riding experience.
