  • AI generated translation
  • AI-generated translation refers to the process of using artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning models, to automatically translate text or speech from one language to another. These systems, such as neural machine translation models, analyze large datasets of multilingual content to learn patterns and associations between languages. The generated translations are based on statistical probabilities and context learned during training.
Higher, further, younger, faster. With a new setup and sensational performances, the Dirt Contest provided worthy highlights at Vienna's Rathausplatz. A wonderful counterpoint and multifaceted complement: the colorful festival program ...18.04.23 10:15 304

For a fraction of a second, the crowd collectively holds its breath. It's as if the whole world stands still, and only those two up in the air keep spinning. Once, and again - that much is clear. But will they land it?

With a solid smack, their tires hit the Landing Bag, first those of Lennox, delicate 15, and just minimally delayed, those of Samy Louis, incredible 12 years young. No wobble, no slip. Straight as a candle, the juvenile duo zips down from the Airbag onto the asphalted runoff. And now all hell breaks loose.

"Yeeaaahhh, Double-Backflip, there it is!" shouts host Andi Brewi into his microphone. Lennox Zimmermann throws his arms up, Samy Louis Fernbach clenches his fists, screaming out the tension accumulated over the last few hours.

"Freeride MTB Athlete" is what his elementary school student Instagram profile reads, and he also has a YouTube channel. When he feels like training, he persuades his father for road trips, long weekends, even flights. Right outside his front door, he has the Dirtgarden in the 23rd district of Vienna, whose leaseholder is now Papa Fernbach.

"A bit embarrassing" found the jumping talent, who grew up in BMX Vösendorf, whose love for dirt jumping only ignited a few months ago on the monster drops in the Spanish La Poma Bikepark, that on the wet-cold Saturday it was always just the same trick. But now, he has delivered. Helmets fly, basses boom. The crowd goes wild.

Young Guns

She has seen more difficult tricks and more prominent pairings on this day. Higher air-time and more creative combinations. But what the Lower Saxon and the Viennese just demonstrated is even bigger cinema. Because as already mentioned: One is 15, the other just twelve. And together, they have just repeated what Samy Louis, as the only twelve-year-old worldwide, managed for the first time in his life exactly three weeks ago at the Masters of Dirt in Innsbruck: a double backflip on a mountain bike.
In a bonus round, to which the Viennese audience exceptionally sent them after a successful backflip no-hander. Before a backdrop that is second to none. After a draw that, of all the 16 freeriders present, brought the two young guns together. And with the mental handicap of an unsightly training fall in front of all the people in Samy Louis's baggage.

The two judges will later honor this prime example of teamwork, talent, and timing - deservedly, but according to the two protagonists still "completely unexpected" - with a victory in the new Syncro competition for Vienna. However, for now, Lennox and Samy Louis reward themselves: The teenagers run up the Landing Bag, jump, laugh, embrace each other, stagger, tumble down again, slide, crawl, hop, cheer, and let themselves be celebrated by their fans and onlookers as if they had always done it this way, Sundays at four.

And occasionally, they have. Samy Louis was just on an Austria tour with the Masters of Dirt anniversary series: Linz, Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz; four weeks, twelve events. Just last year, at the same time as now the "big" Vienna Dirt Battle, the young man performed his final show at the "small" School2Rock. Did he learn there, in the photography class, the typical, cool gestures and moves with which he now celebrates?
Lennox also went through the legendary talent forge of BMX pro Senad Grosic, which has been hosted annually since 2016 as part of the Argus Bike Festival at Vienna's Rathausplatz. In 2018, Germany's rising freeride star debuted here as a ten-year-old. At eleven, he completed the entire M.O.D and achieved his first double backflip on the BMX, and at 14 "he got the Red Bull helmet," Samy Louis reverently tells about the accolade of his companion.

 Completely stoked

How Samy Louis Fernbach feels after Lennox Zimmermann could push him to do a Syncro-Double Backflip in front of thousands of spectators

Almost "the craziest braces of the entire event", as the contest announcer jokingly dubbed the young YT professional, almost added more: Late, very late, he grazed the bar lying at an incredible ten meters height during the high jump competition; under the helmet, there was still room during the obligatory backflip, but it was the rear wheel that finally brought down the bar.
Nota bene: Only four riders were still in the competition at this mark, which, by the way, set a new high jump record for Vienna, and only Nicolas Kroffig from France succeeded in the end.

Writing History

Whoever thinks that with the youngest contest participant and the highest jump ever, the quota of sensations for this year's edition of the event would be full, is mistaken. Indeed, this year one goosebump moment chased the next - and that's not referring to the miserable temperatures and intense rain that made the start of the weekend, but especially the festival setup, a shaky affair.

Take, for example, the 16 boys and girls whom BMX legend Senad Grosic had invited to his classroom of a different kind this year. The 7- to 14-year-old students of School2Rock wear rubber ducks on their helmets and braces in their mouths, but are already diligently practicing One Handers, Toboggans, Nac Nacs, or No Foots - and in the best sense, they exhaust their coach. Especially when they, like Emil, set their minds to the backflip; that trick (and here a circle closes and the Argus Bike Festival gradually writes its own history), which Senad Grosic once also first performed at Vienna's Rathausplatz.
To the sloppy sounds of Nirvana and AC/DC, Emil tries to implement what the veteran has just explained to him in detail: why to lean in with the upper body, when to pull with the arms, what to do with the head, what role the legs play in all this - and he crashes. Less than 30 seconds later, he's back at the roll-in, takes a deep breath, starts off - and this time it works.
It's hard to tell who is more delighted: the newly knighted junior, the announcer along with the audience, Senad's three assistants, one of whom, Philipp Schuster, will later perform a Frontflip No Hander, or the master himself...

 Run, Przemek, run!!!

Moderator Andi Brewi sends the Pole back to the start at a running pace two minutes before the Best Trick deadline, so that after countless failed attempts, he might still manage his Double BackFlip 360 - and he delivers.

The professionals did not just thank with special tricks that are only possible on an air cushion - such as landing high up on it and then abruptly catapulting into another rotation. They rather delivered a perfect show including funny slapstick interludes, impressive camaraderie, and fine extras, and incidentally set off a real fireworks of tricks - including a world premiere:
The world's second-ranked David Godziek succeeded, after several slips in the last attempt of the Best Trick Competition, in performing the first Cash Roll Windshield Wiper on a mountain bike... which means: everything spins, everything moves, terribly fast around everything.

Andi Brewi made an effort to explain what he had just seen as vividly as possible: "That's a Frontflip 720, where he moves the bike once to the left under him and once to the right over him."
The voice of the Dirt Battle even asked DJ Mosaken for a moment of silence, so that the decent family father in the audience rows interrupted his shy swaying to the driving beats, his estimated four-year-old daughter no longer had to duck so deeply into her cat-shaped plush earmuffs, and her accompanying Chihuahua briefly ventured out of the Louis Vuitton dog bag of his stylish mistress.
But how can ordinary people, who typically and charmingly make up a large part of the Vienna audience, really understand such things, when even the seasoned Slopestyler adds, "I'm not at a loss for words, I'm at a loss for sentences!"?

In any case, the Pole reclaimed his Best Trick victory from last year with this Cash Roll Windshield Wiper and increased his total to four Vienna triumphs, followed by his compatriot Przemek Abramovicz (Double BackFlip 360), last year's winner Alejandro Bonafe (ESP, Cash Roll Tailwhip to Barspin) and Dorian Macher (Backflip Superman Seatgrap Indy to Tailwhip) as the best of the total seven (!) Austrians.

See and be seen

But Big Air and hammer tricks are by no means everything at the Argus Bike Festival, on the contrary.
Because there are also the exhibitor tents and the test course, the history corner and the bicycle flea market, the pump track and the children's world, the mechanic workshops and the information stands. Bicycles are checked and vacations are raffled, excursions are made and bargains are hunted, autographs are given and flagship models are honored.
Some show what's new this year, others demonstrate how beautifully revived old things can be. But not only for this reason is the fair considered the actual heart of the event, which continues to beat undisturbed even when it pours for hours, time and again also an impressive testament of the time.

 Let's just have a look!

Festival attendee to his companion, after they are initially unsure about what they want to do first

Who would have thought three years ago that the fingers of one hand would no longer be sufficient to count all the exhibitors on the topic of leasing bikes? Who would have believed, before the cargo bike subsidy, that the tents filled with these humble mules would become crowd magnets? Who would have bet on the current proportion of e-bikes among the exhibits back in the early 2000s - yes, the event was already happening then? And who would have queued for meat made from plants or Alpine risotto with organic celery from Flachgau?

So one looks and is amazed, one collects and buys. One sends their offspring over little seesaws, ramps, and wave tracks, but prudently pinches oneself before a pump track session or even the local fun known as the Sirtaki-Race. One tries (successfully!) to wheelie a cargo bike, one fails (spectacularly!) at the task of "quickly walking through".
One browses and strolls, one chats, one meets. And every now and then, the opening of the Vienna cycling season seems to evoke such spring feelings despite all weather adversities that amidst all the hustle and bustle, one cuddles and kisses completely lost in the moment.

Rolling Variety

Speaking of cuddling: Things also got relatively tight at the second numerical highlight of the weekend, the Vienna Bike Parade. But no wonder: 9,000 participants had to find a place in front of the Burgtheater at the festival's main entrance!
From every corner of Vienna, they flocked by star ride or individual arrival. And those who didn't have a bike with them but wanted to join spontaneously were excellently served by WienMobil. As the local bike-sharing provider was celebrating its first birthday, it temporarily offered its rental bikes for free.

And so they waited or danced to the rhythmic sounds of SambAttac until the official starting signal: the folding bike riders and the tall bikers, the X-Men and the Avengers, the bathing beauties and the polar bears, the Tweed Riders and those in lederhosen, the golden-helmeted and the cowboy hat wearers.
Quadruple-manned cargo bikes next to puristically executed scooters, unraveled e-choppers next to futuristic velomobiles... there is nothing that doesn't exist at this annual, cheerful and colorful demonstration for a city with more cyclists - even perfectly normal two-wheelers in all sizes, colors, and conditions along with similar people on them.
In short: It was an impressive display of joie de vivre and quality of life, which at exactly 12 o'clock took to the road around the Ring, closed to other traffic, to show Vienna how beautiful Vienna would be if Vienna (in terms of traffic, now) were a little less Vienna.

And with that, it's finally time for our traditional preview: On April 13/14, 2024, this scene will repeat itself. And with it, the impression of how beautiful Vienna would be if it always stayed like this – atmospherically, now. Weather-wise, we better not predict anything this time. Maybe it helps …
