  • AI-generated translation refers to the process of using artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning models, to automatically translate text or speech from one language to another. These systems, such as neural machine translation models, analyze large datasets of multilingual content to learn patterns and associations between languages. The generated translations are based on statistical probabilities and context learned during training.
Sonorous surprise: Open-ear headphones with excellent sound and ultimate attentiveness for work, sports, and play.22.11.23 10:01 128

Headphones have become an indispensable companion in everyday life. They allow the enjoyment of music and podcasts without disturbing others and make phone calls easier on the go. Particularly popular are wireless in-ear headphones, as they are compact and fit into any pocket.
But whether the headphones fit directly in the ear canal or completely cover the ears, they tend to become uncomfortable sooner or later or shield too much from the outside world. This can lead to dangers, especially in traffic.

For this reason, we recently introduced the OpenRun Pro from Shokz headphones with bone conduction technology, which were convincing with their more comfortable fit and the extremely high environmental awareness. However, the sound quality was not optimal, the maximum volume level had difficulties with loud street noises, and the headband was not to everyone's liking in certain situations.

Out of interest, we ordered another open-ear model, the Shokz OpenFit, which is based not on bone conduction, but on the equally innovative DirectPitch technology.
Apart from their light, open design, which allows both the sound and the ambient noises to be heard, Shokz promises a successful combination of stability, comfort, and optimal sound experience. We have also subjected these headphones to an extensive review.

DirectPitch Technology

Detailansicht

"Shokz's DirectPitch technology uses inverse sound waves to optimize the distance and angle between the sound source and the human ear, resulting in a relatively high sound pressure towards the ear and a lower sound pressure in directions other than the ear canal. This allows sounds to be heard clearly and distinctly without the earbuds being in the ear, and also has the advantage of reducing sound leaks and protecting privacy."

Aha.

To put it simply: The DirectPitch technology directs the sound through phase shifting in such a way that the maximum volume arrives directly in the ear canal and hardly anything radiates outward. The result is an intense and clear sound, although the earphones are only near the ears and not directly in the ear canal.

Due to the open design without earplugs or ear cushions, all ambient sounds, including calls, ringing, and honking, also reach the ear unobstructedly and can be well located. This feature is not only of great use with various means of transport, but also allows one in the office to hear colleagues' addresses without them having to speak louder.

In practice

In comparison to most headphones, Shokz OpenFit adopts a fundamentally different concept. Although they resemble classic Bluetooth headphones in format, which are deeply inserted into the ears, OpenFit does not sit in the ear canal, but merely rests lightly on the outside.

The sound-producing part is held around the earlobe by a flexible arm, ensuring a comfortable and secure fit for various ear sizes and ear canal diameters. Without sealing the ears, the small speakers provide efficient sound delivery and ensure through DirectPitch technology that the sound directly reaches the ear canal and hardly radiates outward. Overall, there is a light, balanced pressure on the ears, but thanks to the hygienic and overall comfortable fit, it always ensures a firm and secure position.

An absolute "Must-Use" is the Shokz App, which is available for free in the App Store or on Google Play. In addition to the advisable firmware update, you can use it to keep an eye on the battery levels of the headphones and the charging case, play around with the EQ settings, and browse through the manual.

The sound of the OpenFit is amazingly good and clear under normal conditions, even though the surroundings barely notice it. However, the biggest advantage is that the perception of the environment remains almost unaffected as long as the headphones are not turned up too loud.
With normal street noise, on the bus, on the train, while running, and cycling at speeds of up to about 30 km/h, the clarity of phone calls, music, and podcasts was excellent. Depending on the EQ setting (Standard, Voice, Bass, Treble, Custom), even the quality of the sound and the depth of the bass reached a high level. In direct comparison to the OpenRun Pro, which we last reviewed, the clarity and quality were like the difference between day and night.

Only in cases of extremely loud external noises or strong wind did the DirectPitch technology ultimately reach its limits. Up to a certain point, it was possible to compensate for ambient noises by increasing the volume, but then the sound quality began to suffer somewhat. Traditional in-ear headphones perform significantly better in the same price range due to their design.

But to emphasize it again: Under normal conditions, the OpenFit deliver a quite remarkable bass and a very nice and clear sound in the range of voice frequencies. The same applies to phone calls - the communication partner is clearly understandable throughout the entire duration, and the AI noise cancellation of the microphone especially improves the call quality in loud environments (city, train station, wind noise on the bike) by filtering out the majority of all ambient noises.

Another advantage over the OpenRun Pro is the absence of the titanium band. Thus, the Openfit can be worn like normal headphones with a helmet, cap, or glasses and remain securely in position even when lying down or resting the head, without creating pressure in the ear.

Two Criticisms

Criticism #1: Operating the Shokz via the integrated buttons
In theory, audio playback and calls could be directly controlled via the integrated touchpads, keeping the hands free. However, the feel of the two touchpads and their responsiveness in practice is so unsatisfactory that we managed to "double tap" or "press and hold" successfully in only 2 out of 3 attempts. If the buttons were underneath a cap, you could forget about double-tapping altogether.
Our tip: Adjust the button assignments so that you can confidently change the volume on the headphones at any time and use the end device for everything else.

Criticism #2: The soft, secure, and balanced fit poses dangers
The headphones and battery offer such a perfect balance that one easily forgets they are wearing them. If you then take off glasses, a cap, or a helmet, or quickly slip in or out of a sweater, there's a risk of inadvertently pulling down the expensive headphones. I have dropped them on the floor of the entrance hall at least ten times - without any damage, mind you.
Also, quickly taking them off, for example, when you want to put the regular phone to your ear, is not done in a flash. It always ends in a fumble.
For all those who often struggle with similar situations, the headband of the OpenRun Pro would probably be the better choice.

A great feature is the MultiPoint-Pairing, which allows the OpenFit headphones to connect with two devices at the same time. Thus, the headphones can be connected to both the smartphone and the laptop at the same time via Bluetooth and can seamlessly switch the sound transmission from one device to the other. Of course, you always only receive sound from one device. If the smartphone pauses, the laptop automatically starts transmitting - and vice versa.

Important Notes: "Cycling with Headphones in Austria.

In Austria, there is no legal regulation that explicitly prohibits listening to music through headphones while cycling, however, it is advised against in the interest of traffic safety. Hearing ambient sounds is important to perceive potential dangers such as passing vehicles, horns, or other cyclists or pedestrians. Therefore, it is recommended to always keep the volume at a reasonable level.

Furthermore, the traffic regulations stipulate that a vehicle may only be operated by someone who is in such a physical and mental condition that they can control the vehicle and comply with the legal regulations to be observed when operating a vehicle. If one listens to music through headphones so loudly that one can no longer acoustically perceive their surroundings or if the perception is impaired, the required condition is no longer met and penalties may apply. In the event of an accident, contributory negligence could also be attributed.

BB-Verdict: Universal, comfortable headphones with good sound quality for work, sports, and play.

The Shokz OpenFit offer an innovative alternative for athletes who want to enjoy music during their hobbies without losing sight or hearing of their surroundings. They are also a secret tip for those who do not get along with in-ear headphones, as the OpenFit sit just outside the ear canal.

Compared to the OpenRun Pro, the OpenFit deliver a clearer and higher quality sound despite their open design, and it's absolutely fun to listen to music with them in everyday life. Quieter and melodic pieces like "Paramour" by Fleshgod Apocalypse impressed with crystal clear vocals, and aggressive songs like "Vultures of North" by Orbit Culture with powerful bass - perfect for training.

As said, the sound offered here is good, but still no comparison to better noise-cancelling in-ears. For me personally, however, safety while cycling (and in everyday life) outweighs the total sound experience, and in this regard, the Shokz headphones definitely offer added value.
They consciously integrate the outside world into the sound experience, which is particularly advantageous for perceiving ambient noises and reacting quickly to them. Moreover, the open design does not create pressure in the ear, does not trap heat, and avoids problems that people prone to middle ear or eardrum infections might encounter.

Thanks to their ergonomic fit, the OpenFit integrate well into daily life and provide 7 hours of music enjoyment with a single battery charge, which can be extended to 28 hours with the charging case.
Their light and comfortable design is, however, at the same time one of the two main points of criticism. Because at times, you hardly feel that you are wearing the OpenFit and might accidentally rip them off your head.

The second point of criticism concerns the integrated touchpads, which have rather moderate functionality and are difficult to operate compared to the buttons of the OpenRun Pro.
