We begin this review with an observation that we have already made in the last three eyewear stories: "Anyone who has ever worn photochromic (self-tinting) glasses during outdoor sports does not want to miss this comfort. Especially as a cyclist, you are often exposed to changing light conditions and nowadays you don't want to bother with interchangeable lenses or forego protection by taking off the glasses altogether."
Most photochromic lenses automatically react to UV or visible light and switch from category 1 (lightly tinted) to category 3 (darkly tinted) within 20 seconds. However, this is often too slow for spontaneous light changes, such as those occurring when passing through tunnels or quickly alternating between light and shadow in the forest.
Meanwhile, the market also offers electronic cycling glasses that use an integrated LCD module to adjust the tint of the filters to current lighting conditions within a second - without batteries, without charging, and completely automatically. Naturally, this technology comes with higher weight and relatively high costs.
The Music Shield sunglasses from Chamelo Eyewear presented here cost less than most electronic cycling glasses and can be adjusted in tint lightning fast - but only manually. Additionally, the sports glasses connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth, allowing phone calls and music playback for up to 6.5 hours.
Technology
A swipe with the right finger transforms the Music Shields from nearly clear to dark sunglasses, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Thanks to a liquid crystal layer and the integrated battery, the light transmission can be regulated from 17% to 63% regardless of the actual light conditions. Additionally, the mirrored surface of the lenses changes, creating a stylish effect. The tinting occurs promptly, although the degree of tint can only be adjusted somewhat imprecisely.
The built-in battery also powers the stereo speakers integrated into the frame, the microphone, and the Bluetooth receiver unit. In fact, the Music Shields sound very good in quieter environments, even if the sound cannot compete with high-quality in-ear or DirectPitch headphones. This also applies to listening to podcasts or making phone calls. Similar to the bone conduction headphones we also tested, loud street noise or high speeds greatly restrict the listening experience.
The glasses weigh only 49 grams, are equipped with a matte black plastic frame, and have temples without spring hinges. The nose bridge is made of supple rubber and should adapt to most face and nose shapes. Despite the technology, the glasses feel like ordinary sports glasses.
Design and Ergonomics
The Music Shields are available in various frame colors as well as with gray, blue, or red lenses. Common to all models is their striking design with the one-piece, curved visor and the extremely wide arms that house the battery, charging port, and all audio technology. The overall appearance is high-quality, and the workmanship is solid, but it does have some minor weaknesses in detail: The arms can neither be adjusted nor tilted, tend to creak when put on, and the adjustable nose pads stick out a bit, leaving a somewhat unharmonious impression.
The weight of the high-tech glasses is acceptable at 49 grams, which is why they do not press uncomfortably on the ears or nose despite their massive temples. Unfortunately, they are not available with corrective lenses, but Chamelo plans to offer other models with this option in the future.

In practice
Although the design of glasses is always a matter of personal taste and heavily depends on the wearer's head and face shape, the Chamelo Music Shield is likely to be a comfortable sports glasses option for most users. It offers high wearing comfort for hiking, running, and cycling, and ensures a secure and balanced fit despite the many technical features. A fully charged battery provides energy for 100 hours of tinting and 6.5 hours of music enjoyment. Pairing with a Bluetooth-enabled device is quick and easy; a smartphone app is not available.
Once the glasses are turned on with the multifunction button, the tint level can be instantly adjusted with a swipe on the touch slider on the outside of the right temple. The darkening or brightening occurs so quickly that the glasses do not need to be removed when transitioning from bright to dark environments. Moreover, this effect creates an impression and signals to your conversation partner your undivided attention.

Music Shield Tinting FeatureIn practice
Unlike most headphones, Chamelo follows a different concept with the Music Shields. Instead of completely enclosing the ears, two small speakers provide a surprisingly balanced sound, although it is not comparable to the quality of in-ear headphones. Despite the lack of noise isolation, music and podcasts can be heard well in moderately loud environments. The integrated microphone is also well-suited for phone calls.
Control is via the multifunction button, which also serves to turn the device on and off. However, smart features like voice control are not integrated, so it is necessary to have the smartphone nearby to adjust the volume or answer calls.
Although we do not have exact information about this, the glasses automatically turn off after prolonged inactivity. With a charging time of a maximum of three hours and a tint duration of around 100 hours, battery life should not be a major issue, especially if you regularly use the Bluetooth speakers and need to recharge anyway.
Good sound without isolating.
Music Shield Audio FeatureImportant information: "Cycling with headphones in Austria.
In Austria, there is no legal regulation that explicitly prohibits listening to music through headphones while cycling. However, in the interest of traffic safety, it is generally advised against. Hearing ambient sounds is important to perceive potential dangers such as passing vehicles, horns, or other cyclists or pedestrians. Therefore, it is advisable to always keep the volume at a reasonable level.
Moreover, the Road Traffic Regulations stipulate that a vehicle may only be driven by someone who is in such a physical and mental condition that they are able to control the vehicle and comply with the legal regulations that must be observed when driving a vehicle. If you listen to music so loudly through headphones that you can no longer acoustically perceive your surroundings or your perception is impaired, the required condition will no longer be met, and it may lead to penalties. In the event of an accident, partial liability could also potentially be attributed.

BB Verdict: | Smart Bluetooth headphones and tintable sports glasses in one. |
Many cyclists use self-tinting cycling glasses and enjoy their favorite music or podcasts via in-ear headphones. In this context, the Chamelo Music Shield might seem like a hidden gem, as they promise a combination of all three functions (sunglasses, tinting, and audio enjoyment) at least on paper.
In our assessment, they could indeed be a practical and relatively affordable gadget for some users, one that comes without much weight, annoying cables, or arms on the ears. However, there are two limitations to consider.
First: The rider must manually adjust the tinting during cloudy weather, twilight, tunnel passages, or in the forest, even if this is done with just a quick swipe.
Second: Although the sound of the integrated speakers is fundamentally good, it struggles to compete with loud ambient noise or strong wind, especially at high speeds on a racing bike. Podcasts or navigation announcements become unintelligible, and at full volume, the music sounds tinny.
It is undeniable that Chamelo offers an innovative and stylish alternative for athletes with the Music Shields, allowing them to enjoy music while engaging in their hobby without losing sight or sound of their surroundings. They are also recommended for those who struggle with in-ear headphones and are satisfied with a manually adjustable tinting of the lenses.
Thanks to their good fit, they can also be easily integrated into everyday life, offering 6.5 hours of music enjoyment and 100 hours of tinting on a single battery charge - an effect that consistently impresses.
