Cool, but not yet freezing cold; windy, sometimes stormy; then again sunny and warm or foggy and damp. And when things get really tough, then all at once or at least within a ride or training session. Autumn is no easy terrain for clothing manufacturers, as the associated equipment must meet requirements that are at least as varied as the leaves that typically characterize this season.
Castelli has been successfully facing this challenge for years. And that also - which unfortunately is still not a matter of course with some competitors - with an equalizing view of the female clientele.
As if she had anticipated the century's autumn, NoMan chose a fair-weather combo for review purposes this year, which made a good impression from the late summer conditions in September to the now at least half-day emerging winter cold. Here are her impressions.
2023: Warmest autumn in Austria since the beginning of records in 1767.
What is already certain a few days before the end of the meteorological autumn on November 30, and absolutely speaks for the fair-weather combo ...Ottanta LS Jersey W
A "quite normal long-sleeve jersey", not too thin and not too thick, wearable on its own, but also suitable for layering underneath. Hard to believe, but such a standard yet favorite item was missing so far in my otherwise well-stocked cycling wardrobe.
With the Ottanta, I have now found it. Because firstly, the simply and yet colorfully designed jersey looks great and still makes a good impression even when it's partly covered by a vest. Secondly, according to Castelli, the "warmer version of the Warmer fabric" covers a really wide temperature range (manufacturer recommendation: 12-18°C) that also comes with a surprisingly high wind protection. Thirdly, the fit, described by the manufacturer as comfortable, is just perfect to avoid the sausage look even if one is not (anymore) in trained shape, and still fits under a jacket without pinching and squeezing, in case it does get colder eventually.
Standard and at the same time favorite part
Looking for a regular long sleeve jersey, found OttantaIncluding three perfectly placed back pockets, a collar at a comfortable height and width, which thanks to the smooth zipper can be quickly opened or closed for individual temperature regulation, an elastic band with silicone trim that helps prevent it from riding up, and a reflective back piping - autumn cyclist's heart, what more could you want?
In five sizes and three colors (black, violet, light red) for €119.95.
- Warm polyester fabric with an inner layer of brushed fleece
- Elastic with gripper at the hem
- Smooth sliding YKK® Vislon® zipper with neck protection

The Castelli Aria VestAria W Vest
The small back pocket is primarily there for it to pack itself away when not in use. I use it, albeit openly, but also like to keep small items such as house keys or opened bars in it. Those who like to store their digitized music or similar will find the loop on the outer collar a suitable addition for tangle-free cable management.
The attractiveness of the three available colors is debatable. However, the fact is: The cut and the stretch material at the back ensure that the Aria always fits closely, but not uncomfortably to the body. And that makes it the most beautiful wind vest in the world compared to some sack-like counterparts. Available in XS-XL for €99.95.
Product Features
- Ultra-light, windproof woven microfiber material on the front
- Striped mesh material on the back - so elastic that any fluttering in the wind is avoided
- Extremely compact
- 1 back pocket
- YKK® Vislon® zipper
- Reflective details

Velocissima Thermal Knicker for Women
I love three-quarter pants! Long tights are often too hot for me on many days, bare knees are too cold just as often, and knee warmers, although I find them fine due to their flexibility, annoy me because they always slip sooner or later. Unfortunately, it seems that very few other women feel the same way. Or how else can it be explained that the selection of well-fitting knickers is usually scant compared to short or long pants?
Anyway. Castelli helps me get through the changeable season with dignity with the Velocissima, especially since the Thermoflex material of these strapless pants is brushed inside, which provides additional warmth where you need it. Sitting on the KISS Air2 Pad is fantastic, and the leg closure also convinces because it keeps the well-measured ends in place and also reflects.
My concern that pants without straps would slip or alternatively constrict in the abdominal area was completely unfounded. The Velocissima manages the balance between a comfortable waistband and good support.
Available in five sizes and seven subtle color combinations, three of which are currently discounted by 30%, at a price of €89.95.
- Thermoflex material provides warmth and comfort
- KISS Air2 Donna seat pad for long-distance comfort
- Extra flat waistband
- Reflective strip at the bottom of the leg
- Temperature range 12-19°C
A warming touch of nothing!
The Miracolo W Long SleeveMiracolo W Long Sleeve
As a native Viennese, I associate net-like garments with activities other than cycling; accordingly, my reflection in the mirror seems foreign to me as soon as it shows me in the Miracolo. Whether Castelli therefore hesitated a bit with the women's version of the base layer developed in 2020 remains to be seen.
The fact is that the pleasantly stretchy blend of merino wool, nylon, and elastane wicks moisture away from the body well, hardly gets wet itself, is quite light (96 g according to the manufacturer), and despite all this, offers surprisingly much warmth – possibly also because air cushions form in each individual hole?
But it is also a fact that where there is hardly anything, even the most minimal incidents can cause disturbance: threads are pulled faster than you can look. And the sleeves are too long for my taste, which is why under tight jerseys even this thin net, when pushed together, can be unpleasantly noticeable.
Available in five sizes for €89.95.
Product Features
- Merino wool net material with a nylon component for strength and elastane for elasticity
- Minimalist finish at the collar, wrist, and waist minimizes bulk
- Raglan sleeves to avoid a seam at the shoulder under the strap
- Woven scorpion logo label on the side collar
- 96 g (S)
Quindici Soft Merino W Sock
Regarding these Merino socks, so far I can only say what the Castelli website reveals. They are actually much thicker than I thought, which is why they have been too warm for me to wear so far. Moreover, I can't fit into my regular road bike shoes with them, but my larger winter shoes are still packed away.
Anyway, here Merino wool is mixed with a heel and toe area made of nylon, with a support band running over the midfoot. The also relatively thick cuff is 15 cm high. Available in S/M or L/XL in Bordeaux, Military Green, Black or (new) Night Shade for €18.95.
