  • AI generated translation
  • AI-generated translation refers to the process of using artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning models, to automatically translate text or speech from one language to another. These systems, such as neural machine translation models, analyze large datasets of multilingual content to learn patterns and associations between languages. The generated translations are based on statistical probabilities and context learned during training.

In spring, together with Kenda, we gave away two team places for the Balaton Gravel Derby. On the final weekend of August, the time had come: 333 riders took on the 371 km challenge around Hungary’s Lake Balaton. Among them were not only our two winning teams with Simon, Markus, Stefan and Kirin, but also photographer Lukas.

Together, they brought home not only a wealth of experiences, but also top results, finishing second and fifth in the team classification. Photographer Lukas managed to find some beautiful photo spots and, with an eye for detail, capture the event in fitting style.

This year, the Balaton Gravel Derby was rough, fiercely contested, emotional and full of energy.

Small but perfectly formed: Badacsony

Badacsony lies on the northern shore of Balaton, nestled between the lake and vineyards. That was where the weekend really began the day before, as the Kenda Leg Loosener offered one last chance to get the legs moving properly before the next morning’s initially relaxed spin got serious rather quickly.

There’s no huge expo, miles of crowd barriers or event circus here. Kenda, Shimano, a food truck, race number collection – done. Simon describes the organisation as “small but perfectly formed”, with good communication and everything running smoothly. Stefan, who only just made registration at 19:45 the evening before, was equally happy with the organisation. You can tell that the Balaton Gravel Derby is run by the same people behind the Hungarian Divide.

Good Morning, 20 Per Cent

Anyone expecting a flat cruise along the shore at the sight of Lake Balaton is quickly taught otherwise. At 6 a.m., the route heads out of Badacsony and practically straight into the vineyards. Stefan talks of wonderful 20% ramps and delightful leg openers for the remaining 360-plus kilometres. Alternatively, of course, you could simply kick-start your system with an espresso...

Simon and Markus had meticulously studied the route beforehand: checked the elevation profile, combed through Komoot photos, done all their homework. It only helped so much, because the climbs were considerably tougher in the flesh than the profile suggested: steep, often well into double-digit gradients and frequently paired with loose surfaces for good measure.

At least the sunrise, vineyards and recurring views of the lake gave the eyes something in return; the legs had other things to worry about at that point.

Two Teams, Two Races

Simon and Markus got away at the front and fast – very fast, in fact. Over the first 70 kilometres, the pressure was piled on during the climbs, with the lead group repeatedly splitting apart before coming back together. Little was given away.

A long, crosswind-battered straight beside a canal finally produced an early selection: an attack shattered the group into smaller clusters. The only snag was that there were still around 300 kilometres to go.

Simon and Markus let the leaders go. From then on began the game that makes ultra-distance racing so special: ride as fast as possible, but not so fast that you bitterly regret it a few hours later.

Meanwhile, Stefan and Kirin had found their own race. They too went beyond their planned pace at first, but managed to latch onto a good group. After the steep vineyards, the trails became flatter, but another problem moved to the fore: water. For around 70 kilometres, they had found no reliable opportunity to refill their supplies and were correspondingly glad of their hydration packs.

It was still only morning.

No Gucci

On paper, 371 kilometres and around 4,000 metres of climbing sound serious enough. What the bare numbers do not tell you about is the surface.

"You won’t find any Gucci gravel here," is Simon’s rather apt summary. Deep potholes, loose gravel and rough tracks made not only the climbs but also the descents hard work. Even in a group, relaxed pacing in the slipstream was possible far less often than expected.

And then came the sand.

Not for kilometres on end, but deep enough in just the right places to destroy your rhythm and speed with impressive efficiency. One small wrong steering input and your speed instantly drops by a few km/h; ease off the pedals too much and you almost come to a standstill.

The sand really took a lot out of us.

Stefan describes those same sections south of Balaton as incredibly exhausting to ride. Then there were the long, exposed straights and the wind. An interesting mix: fast in principle, but in practice constantly interrupted by sections where the course showed its teeth.

The organiser calls it a mix of Champagne Gravel, open roads, loose, steep climbs, technical sections and the now infamous Sand Pit. The description is accurate – although when it comes to Champagne Gravel, it is probably best not to dwell on the champagne for too long.

35 degrees, shade optional

As the day wore on, the almost cloudless dream weather at the start became another selection criterion: around 35 degrees in the shade, although shade was hardly standard equipment along the route.

For Simon and Markus, the blue water pumps in the villages became correspondingly valuable. Refill bottles, cool head and body, carry on.

At around kilometre 100, Stefan and Kirin reached the first of three feed stations. For an event conceived as fundamentally unsupported, that may initially seem odd, but in practice, given the sparse infrastructure along the route, the stations were anything but a luxury. Later, they even found a café. Espresso, ice cream, cola and – according to Kirin – probably the best cake in the world.

After several hours in the saddle, however, culinary objectivity is a rather flexible concept.

The field hospital

Before the second feed station, the terrain became hillier again – and steeper. In 36-degree heat, there were sections where Stefan and Kirin had to push their bikes uphill. The fact that even mountain bikers dismounted at least made it easier to process psychologically.

At the feed station, which looked more like a field hospital, the riders then lay in the shade. Pasta, cold drinks, a bar – and, above all, the realisation that more than half was already done.

Despite everything, a time under 20 hours was still within reach for Stefan and Kirin. Slowly, the finish was taking on a concrete time.

Further up the road, Simon and Markus had long since been left to their own devices. Their group had kept shrinking over many kilometres until, after around 250 km, the two of them finally continued alone.

What had started as race tactics had by now become a pretty simple routine: pedal, eat, drink, pick a line, repeat.

Water came from hydrants in the villages; otherwise, there were a handful of shops and the feed stations for supplies

Lights on

Simon and Markus had actually wanted to be back in Badacsony before nightfall. The plan did not quite work out; they still had to switch on their lights for the final few kilometres.

At around quarter to nine, they rolled across the finish line utterly spent. Their final time in the results was 14 hours and 42 minutes – seventh overall and second in the Pair classification. Among the teams, only the duo of Hugo Foulon/Tom Paulard were faster, in 13 hours and 38 minutes.

For Stefan and Kirin, meanwhile, the final major section was only just beginning.

Shortly before 10 pm, they reached the third feed station. Kirin had already completed his longest ride to date, with around 100 kilometres still ahead of them. At least the heat disappeared with the sun – and, conveniently, darkness also hid just how long the next climb would drag on.

Deer, foxes and badgers now replaced the spectators. Tarmac remained in short supply.

After 350 kilometres, every Garmin warning of an approaching "unpaved road" began to have a certain psychological effect. Palms, wrists and backsides apparently agreed on their assessment of the situation. The fact that, even at this stage, the organisers had still managed to find rough, off-camber washboard sections heading uphill at least shows consistency.

Fifth place at half past one

At some point, Badacsony emerged from the night once more. At 1:30 am, after 19 hours and 33 minutes, Stefan and Kirin crossed the finish line: 31st overall and fifth in the team category.

A few high fives, a little chat with the organisers – and then? Hotel, shower, bed?

Not quite.

The pair decided to set off immediately on the roughly two-and-a-half-hour drive home to Graz. By then, they had been awake for around 26 hours but, after 371 gravel kilometres, were apparently still sufficiently wired. Some decisions do not need explaining. You just need to survive them.

For this race, I’ll probably abandon my ‘never ride anything twice’ rule and mark it prominently in next year’s calendar.

The Finish

333 riders set off at dawn. At the sharp end, Benedek Borsos needed just 12:54 hours for the long-distance loop around Lake Balaton. Tadej Sedar followed eleven minutes later, while Ádám Birtók completed the solo men’s podium in 13:47 hours.

In the women’s field, Johanna Zimmermann was in a class of her own. The Kenda Gravel Crew rider reached the finish after 16:38 hours, placing 16th overall, followed by Emese Chovanyecz in 18:10 hours.

And then there were the teams: Hugo Foulon and Tom Paulard took victory in 13:38 hours, also finishing third overall. Right behind them came our competition winners Simon Kryuchkov and Markus Petermeier: 14:42 hours, second in the Pairs category and seventh overall. David Sajner and Frantisek Havlicekcompleted the podium in 18:06 hours. Stefan Lind and Kirin Kohlhauserfinished after 19:33 hours as the fifth team and 31st overall.

Simon recommends the Balaton Gravel Derby to anyone who enjoys a tough challenge – with the small caveat that good preparation is highly advisable. Stefan goes one step further. He is prepared to make an exception to his personal “never ride anything twice” rule for Balaton and return in 2027.

After all, there is still one item left on his to-do list: this time, he did not taste a single one of the wines from around Badacsony – reason enough to return. And when a few hundred gravel bikes once again roll out of Badacsony and into the vineyards at dawn in 2027, we will hopefully be there again.
