However, in reality, even minor movements, crosswinds, or high temperatures were enough to significantly diminish the theoretical advantage.
In recent years, other aero helmets have gained popularity: compact models with large air intake and exhaust vents, as well as short-oval teardrop shapes that allow for greater freedom of movement and better adaptation to different back shapes and riding positions – without significant aerodynamic compromises. Additionally, they typically offer much better ventilation, which is a crucial advantage, especially during long time trials and in high temperatures.
The new ABUS GameChanger TT 1.1 adopts exactly this concept. Well-ventilated, short, oval, with a flexible EVA rear that adapts snugly to the neck with every head movement, it combines aerodynamic efficiency with thoughtful temperature management and high wearing comfort – ideal for anyone who wants to stay fast in competition while keeping a cool head.

Despite its robust construction, the helmet remains pleasantly lightweight at around 375 grams (or 400 g including the visor) – a noticeable advantage during longer rides.Despite its robust construction, the helmet remains pleasantly lightweight at around 375 grams (or 400 g including the visor) – a noticeable advantage during longer rides.
In practice (reviewed by Jürgen Kaburek from Team 2RC Format Radshop Kalteis)
The Abus TT 1.1 time trial helmet with its large, tinted visor ("smoke") accompanied me through a variety of weather conditions - from chilly 3 degrees to spring-like 20 °C. Fogging? Not an issue. Even continuous rain couldn't affect the visor. The large field of view remained consistently razor-sharp, and the magnets held it firmly in place without slipping. For the Race Around Austria, I ordered a clear visor from the accessories trade for 58.15 euros, so I didn't have to compromise on aerodynamics even at night.
I was less pleased with the condition of the inside of the visor: a very rough surface designed to prevent fogging, which was almost impossible to clean. Only with plenty of soapy water, water, and compressed air was I able to get it reasonably streak-free - not fun on the go. On the outside, however, cleaning was as usual with a glasses cleaning cloth. I also found it somewhat annoying that the visor couldn't be fixed to the helmet when not in use, which didn't exactly make handling in the transition zone or during transport any easier.
The helmet itself? A poem. Extremely lightweight, with a perfect fit and no pressure points. Even after eight hours with a headset during the RAN from Weitra to Semmering, it’s still comfortable. Ventilation? Top-notch! Fidlock closure: Fantastic! The only downside: It gets noisy from the wind at speeds above 45 km/h.
Particularly well-designed is the flexible, soft area at the lower, rear part of the helmet. This not only makes putting it on easier—especially around the ears—but also ensures a secure and aerodynamically optimal fit. Important: First, make the precise adjustment to the head circumference before moving on to the height adjustment or tilt, as the adjustment wheel becomes difficult to access afterward.
And for those who like to keep their things organized: The included transport box is really practical.

| - | Cleaning the inside of the visor is quite tedious |
| - | Visor cannot be fixed to the helmet when not in use |
| BB Verdict: | Top comfort and functionality, but requires maintenance. |
The Abus Gamechanger TT 1.1 impresses across the board when it comes to fit, comfort, and everyday usability. Anyone who regularly trains in all weather conditions or competes in longer races will appreciate the always fog-free visor and the generous field of vision – even in persistent rain or cold. The Fidlock closure is a small revelation, and the combination of low weight and well-thought-out ventilation makes the helmet a barely noticeable companion on long stages. Overall, there's little to complain about – until the speed exceeds the 45 km/h mark, and the headwind creates an unpleasant background noise.
There’s a deduction for maintenance-friendliness: The rough inner surface of the visor is functional against fogging but a real diva when it comes to cleaning. To maintain clear vision, you’ll need to regularly use soapy water and compressed air. Additionally, the fact that the visor cannot be fixed to the helmet when not in use is anything but practical during transport or in the transition zone.
For those who can live with that and are regularly chasing seconds, the Abus time trial helmet offers a strong overall package that leaves little to be desired.
