On the one hand there was the mini pump that, after what felt like 300 strokes, finally managed to generate enough air and pressure; on the other hand the CO2 cartridge, which gives you exactly one chance to do everything right without losing your fingertips to the ice-cold cartridge. But those days are over thanks to pumps like the Topeak e-Booster Digital Mini. Even if Topeak isn’t among the first to bring such a pump to market, they are at least, for me, the first battery-powered mini pumps that meet my requirements in both build quality and performance. How the pumps fare in practice you’ll find out after a few technical details.
The Times They Are a-Changin'
and with that, our little world of bike pumpsTopeak E-Booster Digital Mini
The Mini is, as the name suggests, the smaller — but also pricier — of the two pumps. At first glance I’d say this is due to the more complex (because compact) construction, the higher-quality color display and the additional flashlight. The Mini’s battery has only 100 mAh less capacity, which in practice hardly makes a difference. At 119 g without hose and 142 g with hose it is indeed a tad heavier than the super-compact mini hand pumps — where your hand can easily give out when pumping up MTB tires — but at the same time it’s a few grams lighter than my previous Lezyne Micro Mini floor pump.
Certificate for first-class backpack suitability

With the Mini, included in the package alongside a small carrying bag and a waterproof zipper bag, the extension hose is particularly important. Although thanks to the Smarthead the pump can be attached directly to both Presta and Schrader valves, using the hose makes sense for several reasons: first, it gives better access to hard-to-reach valves; second, it protects the valve head from accidental kinking when removing the pump; third, a Clik Valve adapter can easily be attached to the hose. Last but not least, the most important reason: because inflation is relatively fast the pump head also becomes very hot, which would be a problem especially for the adhesive used on TPU tubes. With the extension hose you don't have to worry about that.

Topeak E-Booster Digital
The larger of the two pumps, besides the slightly bigger battery and housing as a main difference, also comes with a somewhat different pump head that lets you switch between Presta and Schrader (car) valves using a small lever. The pressure readout is not, as with the Mini, via a small color display but via a backlit, three-digit numerical display for the pressure, along with a small battery level indicator. Included accessories here also include a charging cable, extension hose, carrying pouch and a waterproof zipper. A grippy silicone protective sleeve is also part of the delivery.

Topeak E-Booster Digital Mini Hands-on Experiences
Whenever I think about pumping up tires, so many situations from the past decades come to mind in which I or colleagues struggled with mini pumps or CO2 cartridges. On the roadside at Arco in the rain, when from the first CO2 cartridge at least 50% made it into the tire, but half of it stuck to the cartridge and my fingertip. Or on the Fleckalm trail in Kirchberg, where a race participant three or four times desperately pumped up his XC tire with his mini pump, and each time the valve head came off when unscrewing the pump. Scenes like that are a thing of the past with the Topeak E-Booster Digital.
100 pump strokes or 1 button press
Mini pump vs. Topeak E-Booster DigitalThe use of the electric Topeak pumps is so straightforward, simple and — above all — repeatable several times that I no longer want to be without them from now on — neither in the workshop nor on the trail. The pressure can be preset, the pump head seals tightly and reliably to the valve with or without the extension hose. From then on it's just one button press, and the pump vibrates audibly toward the target pressure. Depending on the tire and pump, this takes between 35 seconds and a minute. After three to four full tire inflations without a break the pump head gets really hot; the battery also becomes noticeably warmer and then correspondingly quickly gives out. Up to that point, however, the pumping experience is a dream compared to analog mini pumps. Here's a small overview of pump time and number of operations:
Performance overview
| Pressure | Topeak E-Booster Digital | Topeak E-Booster Digital Mini | |
| Michelin Wild AM 29x2.4 | 1.5 bar | 56 seconds | 63 seconds |
| WTB Gravel Venture 40 | 2 bar | 29 seconds | 36 seconds |
| Continental Aero 29x622 | 3.5 bar | 25 seconds | 37 seconds |
| Tire inflations | total | 1x road bike, 2x gravel, 3x MTB | 1x road bike, 2x gravel, 3x MTB |

You can very easily screw a Clik Valve adapter onto the extension hose as well; that instantly gives me my current dream combination of a fast pump, which can easily inflate 3–4 MTB tires without any physical effort, and the new valve standard that makes a connection to the pump with a simple click—no screwing, pinching or clamping required. The click is also enough to instantly read the pressure on the pump display. Thanks to the flashlight on the Digital Mini, you can also find the "click" super quickly in dusk and darkness.

| BB verdict: | Goodbye CO2 and hand pumps — a must for your backpack and workshop |
For me personally, the Topeak E-Booster Digital Mini above all marks the end of the hand-pump era. From now on the small version of the E-Booster Digital will always be in my backpack. Yes, the battery should be charged — you need to check that before the start of a ride. But after that you have a small, compact, high-quality pump that takes the manual pumping off your hands, is always ready for use, and thus saves not only effort but also time. The big advantages over CO2 cartridges are that the pump is of course reusable, you immediately notice if the pump is not properly seated on the valve or if the valve is leaking, and as a rule you can fully inflate at least three tires before the battery runs out.
For me the new generation of pumps is a milestone. They are among the most useful tools to have come onto the market recently. Mini hand pumps and CO2 cartridges may still be a good choice for purists, for example in racing use where 50 grams can make a difference, or if you generally want to avoid batteries on the bike.
For everyone else there's hardly a better option in terms of comfort and handling. Combined with Clik Valve, many of the shortcomings around tubes and tires are therefore a thing of the past. The two Topeak pumps are excellent representatives of this new generation and, after several rides and some reviews, I especially give the Mini my clear recommendation to buy.
